BEVERLY HILLS, California: FBI agents searched a mansion in Beverly Hills on Tuesday morning in connection with the federal investigation into former Rep. Eric Swalwell, according to CNN and Fox News. CNN reported that the home is owned by a donor to Swalwell, citing two people familiar with the probe. The New York Post and Fox News identified the home as belonging to billionaire Stephen Cloobeck, a major backer of Swalwell's campaign for California governor who had let Swalwell stay at the house.

What agents were doing there

Reports described federal agents executing a search at the house on Tuesday morning, Oct. 27. None of the outlets reported what agents were looking for or what, if anything, they took. CNN said it had reached out to the FBI and to a lawyer for Swalwell for comment, with no response from either side. A search does not by itself establish that the person under investigation committed a crime, and the allegations remain allegations no court has tested.

The donor who cut ties

Cloobeck was one of Swalwell's largest benefactors. The Post reported that he spent more than 1 million dollars supporting Swalwell's gubernatorial campaign, gave a direct contribution of 39,200 dollars, and provided a private trip to France in 2024 valued at 31,000 dollars. Swalwell stayed at the Beverly Hills house often, the Post reported, and he filmed a video response to the misconduct allegations from inside the home.

When the allegations became public, Cloobeck cut his ties with Swalwell and removed him from the house. "I am no longer associated with a man that takes advantage of women," Cloobeck said, according to the Post. "I support women's rights."

The allegations and the earlier searches

Swalwell, a Democrat, resigned from Congress and dropped his run for governor in April 2026, after reporting by CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle detailed allegations of sexual misconduct against him. Fox News reported that at least five women, including one former staffer, have accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct or rape. CNN reported that the former staffer said Swalwell had raped her. The Post reported that another woman accused him of drugging and sexually assaulting her in 2018, and that two other women alleged he sent them unsolicited images. Swalwell has denied wrongdoing, according to the Post, and he has repeatedly denied the allegations, the Daily Caller reported.

The Manhattan District Attorney's Office and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department opened criminal investigations after the reporting appeared, CNN said. The federal inquiry became visible in August 2026, when agents seized electronic devices from Swalwell at San Francisco International Airport and then searched his home in Washington, D.C., the next day, according to CNN, Fox News and the Post. The Post reported that the warrant used to seize his phone and laptop cited a federal civil rights statute that can be used against public officials accused of abusing government power.

What happens next

Tuesday's search adds a third property to the places federal agents have searched in the case, after the Washington home and the devices taken at the airport. Reports did not say whether Swalwell was at the house during the search, and they announced no arrest or charge connected with it. The FBI had not publicly explained the purpose of the search in the reports published on Tuesday morning.
