England beat Australia 45-22 at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, on Sunday to open their Nations Championship with a record score against the Wallabies. Henry Pollock, a back row forward, came off the bench at half time to replace injured wing Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, played out of position on the wing and scored two tries in about three minutes.
England led 19-10 at half time and finished with seven tries. Jamie George opened the scoring in the 8th minute, Ollie Chessum scored in the 26th and Joe Heyes scored in the 33rd. Jack van Poortvliet added a fourth try in the 43rd minute, Pollock scored in the 55th and 57th minutes, and Ben Spencer closed the scoring in the 76th. Fin Smith kicked five conversions.
Pollock changes the game from the wing
Pollock entered the match at half time in an unfamiliar role. Feyi-Waboso was injured, and England turned to the back row forward to cover on the wing. The move worked at once in the second half. Van Poortvliet scored soon after the restart, and Pollock then struck twice in quick order to put the result beyond Australia.
His two tries came in the 55th and 57th minutes. A forward scoring twice from the wing in three minutes is rare at Test level, and the burst gave England clear control after a closer first half. Spencer added the seventh try late in the match.
Australia stay in touch, then fall away
Australia scored three tries. Max Jorgensen scored on an intercept in the 40th minute, just before half time, and the try cut England's lead to 19-10 at the break. Filipo Daugunu and Jeremy Williams scored Australia's other tries. Ryan Lonergan kicked a penalty for Australia.
The first half also turned on a card. Australia prop Angus Bell was yellow carded in the 32nd minute for a hip drop tackle on Feyi-Waboso. England scored their third try through Heyes shortly after, while Australia were a man down.
Australia could not hold England in the second half. The defeat was their third straight loss.
A record score and relief for Borthwick
England's 45 points are a record tally for them against Australia. The total passed the 44 points England scored in the 44-40 win in Sydney in 2016.
The win also eased pressure on head coach Steve Borthwick. England had lost five of their eight Tests in 2026 before this match, and a home defeat in their Nations Championship opener would have raised fresh questions. Instead they start the championship with a seven try win and a record score, built on a strong first half and settled by Pollock after the break.
For Australia, the task now is to stop a run of defeats that stands at three. They were competitive for 40 minutes at Twickenham, kept in touch through Jorgensen's intercept try, and scored three tries of their own. The second half told a different story, as England added four more tries and pulled clear.
