A 19-year-old motorcyclist died early Wednesday, October 28, when he crashed into the back of a pickup truck on Socorro Road in the Lower Valley, El Paso police said.
Raul Alberto Sias was riding a blue 2006 Yamaha motorcycle eastbound when he crashed into the back of a black 2011 Dodge Ram driven by Alonso Montes, 24, at about 3:30 a.m. in the 9800 block of Socorro Road, El Paso police spokeswoman Detective Judy Oviedo said in a news release. Both men are from Socorro. Sias was mortally injured when he fell from the motorcycle in the impact, and police said speed was a factor in the crash.
Road closed in both directions
Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Socorro Road were closed at Vallarta Drive on Wednesday morning while the El Paso Police Department Special Traffic Investigations Unit worked at the scene. Police spokesman Officer Adrian Cisneros sent word of the closure shortly after 4 a.m. A Texas Department of Transportation live traffic map showed the road still closed at Vallarta Drive for several hours. It reopened by about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The crash happened west of the Socorro city limits and inside El Paso city limits, which is why city police, and not Socorro officers, are handling the investigation.
An early report, corrected
A police spokesman initially said the collision involved a motorcycle and a pedestrian. Police later corrected that account: there was no pedestrian. The corrected version is the one the department stands behind, with Sias on the motorcycle and Montes driving the truck he hit.
KDBC El Paso reported the same fatal crash on Wednesday under its early headline, which still carried the first police wording about a pedestrian. The El Paso Times report, based on the later police release, is the account with the correction in it.
The 56th traffic death this year
Police said the death was the 56th traffic related death in El Paso this year. That matches the number the city had recorded at the same point in 2025, the department stated.
The reports published Wednesday did not announce any charges, and they did not describe injuries to Montes. What police have released so far is a short sequence: an eastbound motorcycle, a pickup truck ahead of it, an impact from behind at about 3:30 a.m., a rider who fell and did not survive, and a road closed for roughly seven hours while investigators worked. Anything beyond that sequence waits on the Special Traffic Investigations Unit.
