EL PASO, Texas (Orbit Post) Eastwood High School is bringing a state championship back to El Paso. The Troopers boys cross country team won the Class 6A title at the UIL state meet on Friday, November 6, scoring 56 points at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock and finishing 12 points ahead of Southlake Carroll.

Eastwood is the first El Paso team to win a state title in Class 6A since the classification was added in 2014, the El Paso Times reported. The Troopers last won state titles in Class 5A in 2018 and 2019. The win completed a clean sweep of the postseason for Eastwood, which also won the District 1-6A title and the Region 1-6A title this season.

Five scorers inside the top 40

Noah Garcia led Eastwood with a third place finish in 14:40.1 over the 3.1 mile course. Noah Loweree was eighth in 15:06.1, Jacob Lara was 12th in 15:15.8, Ayden Betancourt was 17th in 15:30.9 and Elias Alcocer was 36th in 15:46.5. Cross country team scores add the places of the first five finishers, and Eastwood put all five scorers inside the top 40 to build the 56 point total that Carroll could not match.

"We knew we had a chance to win state and we just had to stay focused and work hard," Garcia said.

Loweree said the title was for the Troopers coach. "It feels great to give coach Michael McLain another state title and bring the title back home to El Paso. We had a plan and we stayed focused and calm. This is a special team and we worked hard for this," Loweree said.

A season built in October

Eastwood arrived at state as the No. 2 team in Texas in the state coaches poll, and its October results showed why. The Troopers won the District 1-6A meet on October 14 with 16 points, putting their first four runners across the line before any other school. At the Region 1-6A meet in Lubbock on October 26, Eastwood won again with 48 points, five ahead of Southlake Carroll, the same team it beat again on Friday for the state title.

Eastwood girls place two in the top 10

Eastwood also put two runners in the top 10 of the Class 6A girls race. Kylie Vega finished fourth in 17:43.3 and Carlee Caraveo was seventh in 17:54.3, times that the official UIL results published by RGVSports also list. Franklin High School runner Sophia Barraza finished 68th in 19:05.3.

"I felt like I had a really smooth run and when I finished I was really happy with my effort," Vega said. Caraveo said the top 10 finish was her first at state. "This was my first top 10 finish at state and the hard work paid off," she said.

The state meet continues on Saturday, November 7, with the remaining classifications at Old Settlers Park. For Eastwood, the boys title closes a season that started with a district crown, added a regional crown, and ended with the first Class 6A championship ever won by an El Paso school.
