Ciara Mageean, the Irish middle distance runner who won the European 1500 metres title in Rome in 2024, has died at the age of 34 after a battle with stage four bowel cancer.

A statement posted on her social media accounts on Sunday said she died at 6:30am, surrounded by her loved ones. "At 6:30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones," the statement read. "A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed."

Mageean, from Portaferry in County Down, represented Ireland at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. She announced in July 2025 that she had been diagnosed with cancer, just over a year before her death.

From Portaferry to the top of Europe

Mageean was born on 12 March 1992 in Portaferry, a small town in County Down in Northern Ireland. She built her senior career step by step at the European Championships. She won bronze in Amsterdam in 2016, the same year she raced at the Rio Olympics, then silver in Munich in 2022. In Birmingham in 2022 she also won silver for Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games. In 2023 she finished fourth in the 1500 metres final at the World Championships in Budapest, and in Brussels that year she set the Irish 1500 metres record of 3:55.87, one of four Irish records she held.

The high point came in Rome on 9 June 2024. Mageean won the European 1500 metres final in 4:04.66 and became the first individual Irish European champion since Sonia O'Sullivan. The gold completed her European medal set of bronze, silver and gold. Weeks later, an Achilles injury forced her to withdraw from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games a day before her opening heat, denying her a third Olympic appearance.

Illness, marriage and a final year

On 4 July 2025 Mageean announced that she had been diagnosed with cancer and had begun treatment. Reuters reported that the diagnosis was stage four bowel cancer. She married her partner Thomas Moran on 12 October 2026, last month, only weeks before she died.

Tributes from across the sport

Athletics Ireland said it was deeply saddened by her passing. "Ciara was a much-loved and inspirational figure who touched the lives of so many," its statement read. "Her courage, warmth and spirit will leave a lasting legacy. The thoughts and heartfelt condolences of everyone at Athletics Ireland are with Ciara's family, friends and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. May she rest in peace."

British Athletics said: "Everyone at British Athletics sends our thoughts and condolences to Ciara Mageean's family, friends, and coaches and all our friends at Athletics Ireland at this incredibly sad time. Ciara was a true inspiration on and off the track, may she rest in peace."

Australian 1500 metres runner Jess Hull wrote: "There are no words. Just the most beautiful person in every way imaginable. You will be so missed, our hearts and love are with Tommy and your family." Jake Wightman, the 2022 world 1500 metres champion, called her "a real bright light from our sport and the world gone."

For Irish athletics, Mageean leaves a clear record: European champion, two Olympic Games, a Commonwealth silver medal and national records that stood as the standard for the runners who follow her.
