The Swiss stage of the League of Legends World Championship ended on Saturday in Allen, Texas, with the result of the day: Bilibili Gaming beat Hanwha Life Esports 2-0 to take the last spot in the knockout stage, and the reigning Mid-Season Invitational champions went home early.
Both teams arrived at the Credit Union of Texas Event Center knowing the loser was out. BLG struck first behind a standout Orianna game from knight, whose Shockwave team fights broke open Game 1. Game 2 was one-sided. BLG bullied the top side early, built a lead Hanwha Life never answered, and closed the game in 32 minutes with a 14-3 kill score to complete the sweep.
A first in League of Legends history
The exit carries a mark no MSI winner has worn before. Hanwha Life beat BLG 3-2 in the MSI Grand Final earlier this year, and no MSI-winning team had ever failed to reach the Worlds knockout stage in the same year. Hanwha Life finish in 9th to 11th place. Their Swiss run had already wobbled: they lost to Invictus Gaming and Gen.G in the early rounds before sweeping G2 Esports 2-0 in round four to earn one last chance, and they could not take it.
For BLG, the win settles a score from that MSI final and sends the First Stand champions into the quarterfinals with the field's most feared mid laner in form at the right week of the tournament.
KC carry Europe, LYON carry North America
Two other series settled the rest of the bracket on the final Swiss day. Karmine Corp swept Movistar KOI 2-0 in an all-European meeting to become Europe's last team in the knockouts. KC played both games on their terms, taking dragon priority early and, in Game 2, building a gold lead of more than 4,000 by the 16-minute mark before closing without real trouble.
LYON gave the home crowd the day's best series, beating Brazil's LOS 2-1 to keep North America alive. LOS took Game 1 in 35 minutes and 10 seconds, and in Game 2 LYON fell about 8,000 gold behind before fighting back to level the series. Game 3 went LYON's way in 36 minutes and 46 seconds, with 17 kills to seven, and Berserker's Lucian line of eight kills, three deaths and six assists led the close. LOS leave one win short of becoming the first Brazilian team to reach a Worlds playoff bracket. Team Liquid and G2 Esports were the other big names eliminated during the Swiss stage.
Eight teams now move on to the best-of-five knockout stage. The searches tell the story of the day: League of Legends Worlds sat near the top of United States trending lists on Saturday night, and the bracket is set with the MSI champions already out of it.
