The biggest regular season game of the year in Oklahoma high school football lived up to its billing on Friday night, Oct. 30. Broken Arrow went into Lee Snider Field in Bixby, scored all of its points before halftime and then held top-ranked Bixby scoreless for the final two quarters to win 17-14, ending the Spartans' 24-game winning streak.
The scoring
Bixby struck first. Preston Carter ran 12 yards for a touchdown with 10:50 left in the first quarter, and the extra point put the Spartans ahead 7-0. Broken Arrow answered on its opening drive, when Corey Sango Jr. scored on a 2-yard run to tie the game 7-7. Tylan Montgomery put Bixby back in front with a 9-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter, and Bixby led 14-7.
The second quarter decided the game. Bixby missed a 36-yard field goal, and Broken Arrow then produced its best drive of the night. Octavian Roberson broke a 64-yard run, and quarterback Shamar Banner finished the drive with a 16-yard keeper that tied the game 14-14 with 4:20 left in the half. In the closing seconds of the half, Everett Bules kicked a 20-yard field goal, and Broken Arrow led 17-14 at the break. Neither team scored again.
The stand
The second half belonged to the defenses, and to Broken Arrow's in particular. On3 reported that the Tigers forced four turnovers and held Bixby's offense to 275 total yards. Bixby got one last drive late, converting a fourth-and-2 near midfield with two minutes left, but on fourth-and-15 with 1:28 to play, Oklahoma State commit Bryson Brown intercepted a pass toward the sideline with 1:16 remaining.
Banner then closed the door himself. Facing fourth-and-short with about 40 seconds left and Bixby out of timeouts, the senior quarterback kept the ball and moved the chains, and the clock ran out on the streak. Banner rushed for 111 yards on 24 carries with a touchdown and added 31 passing yards. He had transferred in from out of state during the offseason, and Friday was his first game against Bixby.
What it changes
Broken Arrow improved to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in District 6AI-1, took the district title and will hold the top playoff seed from the district. Bixby fell to 8-1 and 5-1.
