The BBC News channel started streaming live on YouTube in the United Kingdom and the United States on Thursday, October 15, in a trial aimed at younger audiences who now watch news on phones and smart TVs instead of scheduled television. The trial is under way in both countries.
The stream runs around the clock. It carries the channel's rolling coverage of domestic and international news, politics, business, technology and culture, along with breaking stories as they develop.
Two large markets join four others
Britain and the United States are not the first countries to get the channel on YouTube. The stream already runs on the platform in Australia, Kenya, Nigeria and Poland, and Thursday's launch extends the same live feed to the BBC's home market and its largest overseas audience.
Anjali Kapoor, the BBC News Director of AI, Innovation and Growth, said audiences increasingly expect news to be available on the platforms they use throughout the day. "Launching the BBC News channel on YouTube in the UK and US is an important step in bringing our trusted journalism to even more people," she said.
Alison Lomax, YouTube's UK Managing Director, called the launch an incredible milestone. She said it would make trusted news more accessible to a new generation of digital-first viewers.
The channel stays where it was
The YouTube stream does not replace the channel's existing outlets. In the UK, BBC News remains available on BBC iPlayer and through the BBC News website and app. In the US, it remains on cable, on free ad-supported streaming and connected TV platforms, and on BBC.com and the BBC app. AMC Global Media handles US distribution rights for the global channel.
Rivals got there first
The BBC arrives late to live news on YouTube in its home market. Sky News, GB News and Talk already stream live on the platform in the UK. Viewing habits explain the push. Ofcom, the UK media regulator, found that one in five young viewers go to YouTube first when they turn on a smart TV.
