Apple gave the iPad mini its biggest redesign on Monday, October 26, adding an OLED screen for the first time, a new A20 Pro chip and water resistance, and raising the price. The eighth-generation iPad mini has an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, up from the smaller LCD panel on the model it replaces, with a landscape-oriented front camera for the first time. Gadgets 360 reported the launch in India and global markets on Monday, and FoneArena published Apple's full specification sheet and pricing the same day. Pre-orders open on Wednesday, October 28 in 36 countries and regions, and the tablet reaches stores on Friday, November 6.

In India, the Wi-Fi model starts at Rs 82,900 for 128GB of storage, Rs 94,900 for 256GB and Rs 1,18,900 for 512GB. The Wi-Fi plus Cellular model starts at Rs 1,00,900 and rises to Rs 1,36,900 at 512GB. Education pricing starts at Rs 76,900. In the United States the entry price is 699 dollars, up 100 dollars from the previous model. The mini comes in Midnight and Starlight finishes, with a new TechWoven Smart Folio at Rs 8,500 in Navy Blue and Taupe, and support for the Apple Pencil Pro at Rs 11,900 and the Apple Pencil USB-C at Rs 7,900.

What is actually new

The screen is the headline. The 8.5-inch OLED panel runs at 2316 by 1512 pixels with 326 pixels per inch, P3 wide colour and True Tone, and Apple lists peak HDR brightness at 1,200 nits on the panel specifications carried by Indian launch coverage. A nano-texture glass option is offered on higher storage tiers for buyers who read or draw outdoors. The tablet is also IP67 rated for dust and water resistance, a first for the mini line, and it is thin: 5.4 millimetres, at 255 grams for the Wi-Fi model and 263 grams for the cellular model.

Inside, the A20 Pro chip replaces the A17 Pro of the 2024 model. Apple pairs it with iPadOS 27, Apple Intelligence features and a conversational Siri with personal context. The rear camera is a 12 megapixel wide camera with a True Tone flash, and the front camera is a 12 megapixel Center Stage camera placed on the landscape edge, which fixes the mini's awkward video-call framing when it sits in a folio stand. Battery capacity is 19.3 watt-hours, rated at up to 10 hours of web use on Wi-Fi, charged over USB-C.

Why it matters

The mini has always been the odd one in the iPad line: the size pilots, field workers, doctors and readers want, updated less often than the rest. This launch treats it as a premium device rather than a small cheap one. The price rise tells that story in every market: 100 dollars more in the United States, 100 pounds more in the United Kingdom at 699 pounds, and in India a jump of Rs 13,000 at the entry level, from Rs 69,900 for the A17 Pro model to Rs 82,900. At that price the mini now costs more in India than the larger iPad Air at several storage tiers, which makes the choice a genuine one about size rather than money.

The context

Apple launched the tablet days before its Pro and Tell event, where the company is expected to show its first touchscreen MacBook Pro. Shipping the mini first clears the stage and gives the small tablet its own news cycle. Digit's comparison work in India immediately set the new mini against the Oppo Pad Mini, an 8.8-inch AMOLED tablet whose 256GB model sells at Rs 94,999, close to the iPad mini's Rs 94,900 at the same storage. Android rivals have pushed small premium tablets hard this year, and the OLED panel plus water resistance reads as Apple's answer.

What happens next

Pre-orders start October 28 through Apple's website and the Apple Store app, with November 6 availability at Apple Stores and authorised resellers. The buying question for current owners is narrow: the A17 Pro mini still runs the same software, so the case to upgrade rests on the OLED screen, the water resistance and the lighter body, not on everyday speed. For new buyers, the 128GB or 256GB Wi-Fi model is the sensible end of the range. The mini remains the only tablet in Apple's line that fits in a coat pocket, and as of Monday it is finally specified like it matters.
