Game 1 of the 2026 WNBA Finals is Saturday, October 17 at 3:30 p.m. ET at Chase Center in San Francisco. That is 12:30 p.m. PT and 2:30 p.m. CT. The game airs on NBC and streams on Peacock. The No. 2 seed Golden State Valkyries host the No. 4 seed Atlanta Dream in the opening game of the series.

Golden State is in only its second season. Atlanta is back in the Finals for the first time in 13 years.

The matchup

Atlanta finished 30-14, the best record in the Eastern Conference, and is 5-0 in the playoffs, unbeaten on the way to the Finals.

Golden State swept the defending champion Las Vegas Aces in the semifinals. That sweep is a big reason Golden State enters Game 1 as the slight favorite. BetMGM lists Golden State at -115. The first two games are at Chase Center, before the series shifts to Atlanta.

Atlanta is chasing a first title

This is the fourth Finals appearance in Atlanta franchise history. The Dream lost the first three. They are still chasing their first championship.

Atlanta last reached this stage 13 years ago. This series is a chance to finish a story that stalled at the last step before.

Rhyne Howard, Allisha Gray, Jordin Canada and Angel Reese lead Atlanta. Reese won this season's Defensive Player of the Year award. The Dream defend and share the load on offense.

Health is the one question. Gray hurt her left ring finger, missed two playoff games, and said she is day-to-day heading into the Finals. Gray is a key scorer and defender, and Atlanta is a different team when she is limited or out.

Golden State, in year two

Golden State joined the league as an expansion team in 2025. In its first year, the team lost in the first round of the playoffs. One year later, it is hosting Game 1 of the Finals.

Expansion teams usually need years to build a roster. The Valkyries have done it in two seasons.

Gabby Williams leads Golden State in the playoffs, averaging 22.7 points per game. If she keeps scoring at that rate, Atlanta will have to change its defense, and that opens space for her teammates.

Kayla Thornton brings experience. She won a WNBA title with the New York Liberty in 2024 and made her first All-Star team this year with the Valkyries.

Key numbers

Atlanta record: 30-14 in the regular season, best in the Eastern Conference. Atlanta playoff record: 5-0. Golden State playoff scoring leader: Gabby Williams at 22.7 points per game. Seeds: Golden State No. 2, Atlanta No. 4. Odds: Golden State -115 at BetMGM. Finals appearances for Atlanta: four, with no title yet.

Full Finals schedule

Game 3: Wednesday, October 21 at Atlanta, 8 p.m. ET. Game 4: Saturday, October 24 at Atlanta, 1 p.m. ET, on NBC. Game 5, if necessary: Monday, October 26 at Golden State. Game 6, if necessary: Thursday, October 29 at Atlanta. Game 7, if necessary: Saturday, October 31 at Golden State.

Why it matters

For Atlanta, this series is about history. A first title would reward a long wait for its fans. For Golden State, a title in year two would set a new mark for how fast a new team can reach the top. Game 1 sets the tone. The winner gets control, the loser has to answer fast in Game 2 on Monday.

What happens next

After Game 1 on Saturday, the teams stay in San Francisco for Game 2 on Monday, October 19. The series then moves to Atlanta for Game 3 on Wednesday, October 21 and Game 4 on Saturday, October 24. If the series goes long, it returns to Golden State for a possible Game 5 and a possible Game 7.

For Saturday, watch three things. First, Gray and her finger. Second, Williams and whether Atlanta can keep her under her playoff average. Third, the start. Atlanta has not lost in these playoffs, and Golden State has home court. The first quarter will show which run means more.
