No. 8 UCLA beat Minnesota 34 to 20 at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on Saturday, and the Bruins are 9 and 0 for the first time since 1998. The game was tied in the fourth quarter before wide receiver Aidan Mizell broke it open with touchdown catches of 75 yards on the first play of consecutive UCLA drives.
A tie game, then two plays ended it
Minnesota quarterback Drake Lindsey tied the game 17 to 17 with 12 minutes 50 seconds left, throwing a 4 yard touchdown pass to tight end George Rohl. UCLA answered on the next play from scrimmage. Quarterback Ty Dieffenbach found Mizell over the middle for a 75 yard touchdown and the Bruins led again, 24 to 17. Minnesota kicker Luke Drzewiecki made a 38 yard field goal with 7 minutes 31 seconds left to cut the lead to 24 to 20. On the first play of the next UCLA drive, Dieffenbach went back to Mizell, who got behind the secondary again for another 75 yard touchdown and a 31 to 20 lead. Cornerback Scooter Jackson intercepted Lindsey with 7 minutes 10 seconds left, and a late field goal closed the scoring.
Mizell finished with two catches for 150 yards, both of them touchdowns. Dieffenbach completed only 8 of 16 passes but threw for a career high 303 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Wayne Knight carried 18 times for 109 yards and one touchdown.
UCLA started fast, then let Minnesota back in
The Bruins led 10 to 0 in the first quarter after a field goal and a 1 yard Knight touchdown run with 4 minutes 48 seconds left in the quarter. Minnesota running back Darius Taylor scored on a 3 yard run early in the second quarter, and Drzewiecki tied the game 10 to 10 with a field goal as time expired in the first half. UCLA retook the lead in the third quarter when Dieffenbach hit tight end Noah Fox-Flores for a 27 yard touchdown. The Bruins blocked a Minnesota punt later in the quarter but came away with no points after a holding penalty wiped out a touchdown run and Dieffenbach lost a fumble on the next play.
Minnesota's first Big Ten home loss since 2024
Lindsey finished 18 of 34 passing for 202 yards, one touchdown and one interception for Minnesota, which fell to 5 and 4 overall and 3 and 3 in the Big Ten. It was the Golden Gophers' first Big Ten home loss since 2024. Minnesota entered the game allowing 178.9 passing yards per game, 24th in the FBS, and held UCLA in check for three quarters before the two long touchdowns in the fourth.
What it means for the playoff race
UCLA is 9 and 0 and 6 and 0 in the Big Ten in coach Bob Chesney's first season. The Bruins checked in at No. 8, behind two two-loss SEC teams, in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season, and a road win after a fourth quarter tie gives the committee a fresh result to weigh. UCLA has outscored opponents 110 to 39 in fourth quarters this season and still has not trailed in a fourth quarter. The Bruins host Illinois on Friday night with a chance to reach 10 and 0.
