Key points

  • UKMTO recorded the attack in Warning 196-26.
  • The tanker has not been named.

A tanker was struck by two unidentified projectiles in the Persian Gulf, about 50 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal on Qatar's northern coast, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency said on Thursday. The agency dated the strike to 23:20 GMT on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.

UKMTO recorded the attack in Warning 196-26. The agency said the status of the crew, the damage assessment and any environmental impact were unconfirmed when the warning was issued. It advised vessels in the area to transit with caution and to report any suspicious activity, and said authorities were investigating.

What is still unknown

The tanker has not been named. UKMTO did not give its flag, its cargo or its destination, and it did not say what kind of projectiles hit the ship or where they were fired from. No group has claimed the attack, and no government has publicly attributed it.

Reuters and the Associated Press both reported the UKMTO warning on Thursday, November 5. Neither wire identified an attacker. That limit matters. The warning establishes that a tanker reported being struck north of Qatar. It does not establish who carried out the strike, and this report does not treat any other claim about Gulf shipping on Thursday as part of this incident.

A run of strikes on Gulf shipping

The Qatar strike is the latest in a series of attacks on commercial ships in and around the Gulf during the war between the United States and Iran. Reuters reported that at least five vessels had reported incidents since Sunday, citing UKMTO figures.

In a separate incident, Qatar's Nakilat said on Sunday that its liquefied natural gas carrier Al Mayeda had been hit by unidentified objects while transiting the Persian Gulf on October 30. No crew members were injured and there was no environmental impact, the company said, adding that the vessel remained safe and operational while the impact was assessed.

Reported as mediation continues

Qatar has stepped up its mediation efforts to end the war between the United States and Iran. A spokesperson for Qatar's foreign ministry said on Tuesday that both sides were reviewing proposals put forward by mediators, with talks continuing.

The strike north of Qatar was reported in the same waters where that diplomacy is trying to keep shipping moving. Until UKMTO or another authority names the vessel and accounts for its crew, the confirmed facts stay narrow: two projectiles, one tanker, a position about 50 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal, and an investigation that has not yet reported.
