One person was killed and the suspected gunman is dead after a shooting inside the Citibank Center cafeteria in Brandon, just east of Tampa, on Wednesday afternoon. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said the attack was reported just after noon at the bank's Sabal Park corporate campus, and Sheriff Chad Chronister said it appeared to be a targeted incident, not a random attack.

The victim was found wounded and bleeding in the cafeteria, according to sheriff's scanner traffic reported by the New York Post. The suspect was also dead. Chronister first told reporters a person had been taken into custody, then confirmed in a post on X that the suspect was deceased. Sources told the Post the shooting is believed to have involved a vendor who worked at the facility, not a Citibank employee.

A vehicle crash, then gunfire

Scanner traffic described a gray vehicle that crashed into the building moments before the shooting, and a gunman seen inside the cafeteria carrying a shotgun and a handgun. Those early radio reports have not all been confirmed by investigators, and the sheriff's office has not yet released the names of the victim or the suspect, or said how the suspect died.

An emergency alert sent to the area told people to shelter in place, stay indoors, lock their doors and stay away from windows. The sheriff's office asked the public to avoid the area of Queen Palm Drive and Falkenburg Road until further notice.

Campus emptied and swept

Deputies evacuated the entire building and SWAT teams swept it room by room while other deputies cleared the rest of the campus. Aerial footage showed law enforcement moving across the large corporate park on Wednesday afternoon. One woman was carried away from the office park on a stretcher, and employees were sent to a reunification site in a nearby parking lot, where groups waited in the lot after the evacuation.

Students and employees at the nearby college were warned to shelter in place while the police activity continued. The campus sits about 9 miles northeast of downtown Tampa, near Interstate 75 and East Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

A major Citi site

Citi employs more than 10,000 people in the Tampa region. The corporate park covers about 670,000 square feet and houses departments that include global banking, technology, legal, compliance, risk management and human resources for the New York based bank.

Detectives were still working the scene on Wednesday afternoon. The sheriff's office said the investigation is active, and no motive has been announced.
