Baltimore, Maryland: Ravens Lose Tyler Huntley for the Season, Rookie Joe Fagnano Starts Thursday

Key points

  • The Baltimore Ravens have lost their backup quarterback for the season, one day before they host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night.
  • Huntley was hurt on Sunday in Buffalo, in the second quarter of a 36-10 loss to the Bills.
  • Jackson will require surgery on his thumb and is headed to injured reserve, the Ravens' own site reported.

The Baltimore Ravens have lost their backup quarterback for the season, one day before they host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night. Tests revealed that Tyler Huntley suffered a season-ending turf toe injury, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday, November 4. NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported that Huntley is expected to have surgery to repair the toe.

Huntley was hurt on Sunday in Buffalo, in the second quarter of a 36-10 loss to the Bills. He had replaced Lamar Jackson, who hurt his right thumb on Baltimore's first offensive play. USA Today reported that Huntley was twisted to the ground by Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver and his right foot planted awkwardly. Huntley left the game and did not return. Undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano finished the game.

Two quarterbacks down in one game

Jackson will require surgery on his thumb and is headed to injured reserve, the Ravens' own site reported. He will miss at least the next four games. Coach Jesse Minter said on Sunday, November 1, after the Buffalo game: "That'll be a surgery deal. He'll go to IR. That's a tough deal." Minter has also said Jackson's injury could potentially be season-ending, and Jackson had not yet had surgery when Minter spoke to reporters on Monday, November 2.

Huntley had been ruled out for the Jacksonville game before Wednesday's test results made his absence a season-long one. He finishes 2026 with a 1-2 record in three starts, all made while Jackson was out with an ankle injury earlier in the season. In five games he completed 76 of 110 passes for 727 yards, four touchdowns and one interception, and ran for 76 yards and one touchdown. The 28-year-old has spent six of his seven NFL seasons with Baltimore and has played 30 games for the Ravens.

Fagnano gets the start

Minter announced on Tuesday that Fagnano will start on Thursday night against Jacksonville at M&T Bank Stadium. The game kicks off at 8:15 p.m. ET. Fagnano completed 10 of 21 passes for 91 yards with one interception in relief in Buffalo. He is dealing with an ankle injury from that game, but he was a full participant in Tuesday's practice.

Baltimore added depth this week. The Ravens signed Kedon Slovis to the 53-man roster off the Green Bay Packers' practice squad on Tuesday, and brought back Austin Reed to the practice squad on Monday. Reed played for Baltimore in training camp and the preseason. Slovis played under Ravens quarterbacks coach Israel Woolfork with the Arizona Cardinals last season.

Baltimore is 4-4 after three straight losses. Thursday's start makes Fagnano the second undrafted rookie quarterback to start a game in Ravens history, Athlon Sports reported. How he plays could shape whether Baltimore looks for another quarterback before the November 10 trade deadline.
