A Sioux Falls man has been arrested in a home burglary investigation that started with a masked intruder inside an occupied home on the night of October 28.

Wakiyaku Irons, 24, was arrested on Thursday after detectives served a search warrant at his home, according to the Sioux Falls Police Department. Detectives say they found clothing worn by the suspect during the burglary, along with items belonging to the victim.

Irons is charged with three counts of burglary, abuse or neglect of a disabled adult, felony intentional damage to property, and grand theft, Dakota News Now reported on Friday.

A masked man inside the home

Police responded to the area of West 49th Street and South Westport Avenue for a report of a residential burglary at about 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28.

The victim reported hearing banging on the door. When they went to investigate, they found a masked man inside the home. The glass door leading into the home had been broken, police said.

The home was occupied at the time. The police accounts published so far do not mention any injury in the break-in, and they do not say what the intruder took before he left.

Police asked the public for help

One day after the break-in, on October 29, police asked the public for information. The department said a masked man had broken into a Sioux Falls home with the residents still inside late Wednesday, and investigators wanted tips from anyone who recognized him.

A cash reward of up to $1,000 was offered through Crime Stoppers of the Sioux Empire for information leading to an arrest.

The search warrant

Detectives from the department's Property Crimes Section later identified Irons as the suspect, police said. That work led detectives to the search warrant at his home, and to his arrest on Thursday, November 5.

Police say the clothing and the victim's items recovered in the search tie Irons to the October 28 break-in. The department has not released more detail about what was taken from the home, or about the damage beyond the broken glass door.

The charges against Irons are allegations. The case will move through the courts, and police have not announced a court date in the reports published so far.

Dakota News Now reported the arrest on Friday, November 6, one day after the search warrant was served.
