Shopify shares fell about 16 percent in premarket trading on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, after the company reported third quarter results that missed revenue estimates for the first time since 2022. Some reports put the premarket drop as high as 19 to 20 percent at the extremes. The fall came even though earnings beat Wall Street estimates, which shows how much weight investors put on the two lines that came in light: total revenue and merchant volume.
Shopify reported the results before the opening bell on Tuesday. Revenue rose 32 percent year over year to $3.74 billion, just short of the $3.75 billion analysts expected according to FactSet data cited by Dow Jones Newswires. Net income was $462 million, or 36 cents a share, up from $264 million, or 20 cents a share, a year earlier. Adjusted earnings were 49 cents a share, ahead of the 47 cent FactSet consensus.
The lines that missed
Gross merchandise volume, the value of goods sold through the platform, rose 29 percent to $119.15 billion, below the $120.08 billion analyst estimate. GMV growth also slowed from the 32 percent rate of the prior quarter. Subscription Solutions revenue rose 20 percent to $836 million, trailing estimates of roughly $850 million. Merchant Solutions revenue was the stronger line, up 35 percent to $2.91 billion, ahead of the $2.88 billion estimate.
Profit and cash still grew fast
The profit picture was firmer than the share price suggested. Operating income jumped 66 percent to $568 million, beating the $523.9 million estimate. Free cash flow was $816 million, a 22 percent margin, up from 18 percent a year earlier. Gross profit rose 28 percent to $1.78 billion. Monthly recurring revenue reached $230 million, up from $193 million in the third quarter of 2025.
What Shopify guided for the holiday quarter
For the fourth quarter, Shopify guided revenue growth at a low thirties percentage rate, gross profit dollar growth at a high twenties rate, and operating expenses at 29 to 30 percent of revenue. The company put stock based compensation at $155 million for the quarter, and guided its free cash flow margin to a level consistent with the fourth quarter of 2025.
The market reaction sets the question for the holiday quarter. A company that grows revenue 32 percent, beats on adjusted earnings and raises operating income 66 percent still lost about a sixth of its market value before the open, because revenue, merchant volume and subscription sales all landed just below the numbers analysts had set.
