Polish authorities have arrested four people on charges of spying for Russian intelligence services and providing them with military components, the Polish Internal Security Agency, known as the ABW, said on Thursday. Reuters reported the ABW statement, and the Associated Press reported the same arrests with added detail on the court measures that followed.

Four suspects, including a 37 year old Russian woman, were charged with espionage and placed in pretrial detention for three months, the ABW said, according to the Associated Press report. Two other people, accused of taking part in an organised criminal group, were placed under non-custodial preventive measures. Among the six suspects in total are five Poles, aged 25 to 52, and the Russian woman, Reuters reported.

What the agency alleges

The detainees conducted activities on behalf of the Russian special services and took part in activities supporting the military potential of the Russian Federation, the ABW said in its statement. The agency said the group illegally supplied Russia with significant quantities of military components used, among other things, for the production of ammunition and weapon systems. All six also face allegations of breaking rules on international trade in goods and technologies of strategic importance to national defence and international security, the Associated Press reported. The charges are allegations by the Polish authorities. No finding of guilt has been reported.

Tomasz Siemoniak, the head of Poland special services, told reporters that Russia is subject to a strict embargo in this area, and that the operation was designed to circumvent it. Siemoniak said the agency suspects about 100 people of involvement in espionage and sabotage incidents since January 1, 2024, Reuters reported.

Poland, Ukraine and the Kaliningrad border

Poland is a member of the European Union and NATO, a major supporter of Ukraine, and the main transit route for Western military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Warsaw has repeatedly accused Russia of sabotage since Moscow launched its full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Poland had foiled a possible provocation at its border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, the Associated Press reported.

The Russian Embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment, Reuters reported. The Kremlin has consistently denied conducting sabotage operations in NATO countries or plotting any confrontation.
