A Drexel University student has been charged with attempted murder in a shooting that left another 22-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the neck at a home in North Philadelphia on Monday morning, police and local reports said.
Jackson Roberts, 22, was taken into custody at the scene on the 900 block of West Dauphin Street, in the Hartranft neighborhood, PhillyVoice reported. Responding officers found Roberts and the injured man at the property at about 9:20 a.m. on Monday. The injured man was taken to Temple University Hospital, where his condition was listed as stable as of Wednesday.
A fractured vertebra and a bullet fragment
The Philadelphia District Attorney's office said the injured man sustained a fractured vertebra in his neck and that a bullet fragment remained lodged inside, The Triangle, Drexel's student newspaper, reported. Officials said the injury could result in permanent mobility issues.
The Triangle reported that Roberts was at a friend's house with a group that included the injured man. Witnesses identified Roberts as the alleged shooter, and investigators recovered a .45 caliber handgun from the home's kitchen counter, the paper reported. Two witnesses told police they saw Roberts holding the gun right after they heard the shot. People in the home had been drinking and using substances and did not see the actual shooting, according to the accounts reported by The Triangle.
Roberts told law enforcement, after he was read his Miranda warning, that he did not remember anything, The Triangle reported.
Drexel confirms enrollment, hearing set for November 20
Drexel University confirmed that Roberts is currently enrolled at the school, PhillyVoice reported. His LinkedIn page lists him as a mechanical engineering student. Drexel said in a statement reported by The Triangle that the university is taking measures consistent with its policies and is cooperating with law enforcement.
