Homeowners in Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville and across Florida are getting a rare piece of good news on insurance this month. More than 824,300 Florida homeowners will receive rate decreases on new policies or renewals that took effect in October, with cuts as deep as 12.1 percent, the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation said on Thursday.
Insurance Commissioner Mike Yaworsky and Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia highlighted the decreases in a joint announcement on October 29. The cuts come from rate decrease requests filed by major insurance companies and approved to take effect this month.
Which companies are cutting, and by how much
Among the October filings highlighted from the regulator's chart, Cypress cuts rates by an average of 12.1 percent for about 64,300 policyholders from October 1, and Castle Key Indemnity cuts 12 percent for 51,580 customers from October 11. Universal Property and Casualty, one of the largest home insurers in the state, cuts 5 percent for about 512,000 customers from October 16. Olympus cuts 0.1 percent for 66,800 clients from October 31.
Since January 2024, 48 companies have filed for a rate decrease, and 53 companies have requested no change, a 0 percent increase, the office said. Two sets of August filings are already in effect: American Integrity filed a 0.3 percent decrease for 184,000 consumers and a 12.3 percent decrease for 8,900 consumers, and Florida Family Home Insurance filed an 8 percent decrease for 20,700 consumers.
What officials say, and what comes next
"We are not taking the foot off the gas, and plan to announce more rate decreases in the next two months and going into the new year," Yaworsky said. He said the office is reviewing each request and in some cases pushing companies for larger decreases when its actuaries decide the companies can afford them.
Ingoglia credited the state's tort reforms for the improving market. "Florida families deserve to pay the lowest rate for the best coverage possible for their homeowners insurance policies," he said.
More relief is already queued up. The regulator has multiple decrease requests pending that take effect in November, December and January, covering an additional 450,000 Floridians, the office said.
What this means for a household bill
The decrease applies when a policy is new or comes up for renewal, not in the middle of a term, and the amount depends on the company and the policy. A homeowner with Universal will see the 5 percent figure at renewal, while a Cypress customer could see up to 12.1 percent. Homeowners who want to know their own number should read the renewal notice from their insurer rather than assume the statewide headline rate.
For families in Miami-Dade, Hillsborough, Orange and Duval counties, where premiums have been among the most painful household bills of the last several years, even a single digit cut is real money at renewal time.
