Daniil Medvedev secured a place at the season-ending ATP Finals for the seventh time on Friday, beating Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3 to reach the Vienna Open semifinals, Reuters reported.

The 30-year-old Russian took control early with a break of serve and eased through the first set. He broke again at 3-3 in the second set and closed out the match with one more break.

Medvedev missed the ATP Finals last year after qualifying every year from 2019 to 2024. He joins Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton in the eight-man field. Jannik Sinner has also qualified but will not play because of injury, leaving four places still open.

The win continues a strong run of form. Medvedev has passed 50 wins in a season for the first time since 2023 and has won four titles this year.

Mannarino's name sat at the top of Google's trending searches in the United States on Friday as fans followed the Vienna quarterfinals. Medvedev will play either Tommy Paul or Carlos Alcaraz for a place in the final.

The manner of the win mattered as much as the result. Medvedev, a former US Open champion, controlled the match from the first games, breaking Mannarino early and never letting the Frenchman settle into the rallies. The second set stayed level until 3-3, when Medvedev broke again, and he finished the job with a second break to end the contest in straight sets.

The berth restores a streak that defined his late seasons. Medvedev qualified for the ATP Finals every year from 2019 through 2024, then missed out last year. This season he has rebuilt that standing piece by piece, passing the 50-win mark for the first time since 2023 and collecting four titles along the way, a return to the consistency that marked his best seasons.

The field he rejoins is still taking shape. Zverev, Alcaraz and Shelton are confirmed alongside him. Sinner holds a place on ranking points but will not compete because of injury, which opens the draw further, and four spots remain undecided heading into the final stretch of the season. That makes Vienna more than a semifinal run for the players still chasing points, and it is why the quarterfinal drew heavy search interest on Friday, with Mannarino's name leading Google's trending list in the United States. Medvedev's semifinal opponent, Paul or Alcaraz, keeps him in that same company: Alcaraz is already Finals-bound, so the Vienna weekend doubles as an early meeting of the season's closing field.
