LAWRENCEVILLE, Georgia (Orbit Post) Two people were shot and killed on Heather Stone Way in Lawrenceville on Wednesday night, and Gwinnett County police took a third person into custody at the scene.

Officers were called to the residential street at about 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4, after reports that someone had been shot. They found two victims at the scene, and both had died, police said. FOX 5 Atlanta reported an active homicide investigation on the street on Wednesday night, with investigators on the scene gathering evidence and working to determine what led to the death.

One person in custody

A third person was still at the location when officers arrived and was taken into custody. Police said that person was cooperating with detectives and was the only person considered a suspect at that stage. Investigators were interviewing the detained person as they worked to establish the sequence of events on the street.

Cpl. Angela Carter, a public information officer for the Gwinnett County Police Department, said investigators believed the people involved knew one another. She said the incident was "potentially" drug-related, although detectives had not established what led to the gunfire. Police said there was no continuing threat to the wider community.

Neighbours raised the alarm

Carter said the victims were visible from public areas of the street, which led several neighbours to call emergency services after hearing the shots. It remained unclear whether the two people who died were related to one another or lived in the neighbourhood.

Lawrenceville is the county seat of Gwinnett County, northeast of Atlanta, and the homicide investigation is being handled by Gwinnett County police.

The investigation

Detectives spent Wednesday night gathering evidence on Heather Stone Way and interviewing the person in custody. Police said they planned to provide updates after completing an initial assessment of the scene.

The first police account of the shooting, carried by FOX 5 Atlanta on Wednesday night, confirmed that a homicide investigation was under way and that investigators were on the scene gathering evidence. The fuller account, with the person in custody and the statement from Cpl. Carter, followed from the police department as the investigation continued.

For now, the case rests on the interview with the person in custody and on the evidence gathered on the street. Police have not said whether the detained person will be charged or released, and they have given no indication of when the two people who died will be named.

What police have not said

Police have not released the identities or ages of the two people who died, and authorities have not disclosed the identity of the person detained or announced any charges. Detectives are expected to provide further information as the homicide investigation develops.
