Key points

  • House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries formally launched his bid for Speaker of the House on Wednesday, Nov 4, 2026.
  • "I write to humbly request your support in connection with my candidacy to serve as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives," Jeffries wrote in the letter.
  • The letter does more than ask for votes.

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries formally launched his bid for Speaker of the House on Wednesday, Nov 4, 2026. He sent a Dear Colleague letter to fellow Democrats announcing his candidacy, one day after Democrats won control of the House and the Senate in the Nov 3 midterms.

"I write to humbly request your support in connection with my candidacy to serve as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives," Jeffries wrote in the letter.

The letter does more than ask for votes. It sets out the agenda Jeffries wants to lead and the first fights he wants to take on in the opening months of the new Congress.

A historic candidacy

If Jeffries wins the floor vote on Jan 3, he would become the first Black Speaker in House history. He is seeking to become the 57th Speaker of the House.

The path runs in two clear steps. First, Jeffries needs the support of a majority of House Democrats at the party leadership elections on Nov 18. Then he needs 218 votes on the House floor when the new Congress convenes on Jan 3. The second vote, in front of the full House, decides who holds the gavel.

Jeffries, 56, is from Brooklyn, New York. He has led House Democrats since January 2023, Reuters reported, through the years when Democrats were in the minority. The midterm result on Nov 3 gave his party control of both the House and the Senate.

No challenger to Jeffries has emerged. Some incoming progressive Democrats have not yet committed to backing him, Newsmax reported, citing Politico. Their support will matter on Nov 18 and again on Jan 3.

Affordability, accountability and American values

Jeffries organized his letter under three headings: Affordability, Accountability and American Values.

"House Democrats must deliver dramatic change," he wrote.

He also drew a direct line with the House that is now ending. "The days of the House functioning like a wholly owned subsidiary of the Trump Administration are over," he wrote.

For the first 100 days, the letter lists specific priorities. Jeffries said a Democratic House would work to reverse Medicaid cuts and restore SNAP funding. SNAP is the federal food aid program. He also called for extending Affordable Care Act tax credits, which help people pay for health cover. On trade and foreign policy, he called to eradicate the Trump tariffs and stop the war in Iran.

To build that agenda, Jeffries announced five working groups. They will cover housing, healthcare, groceries and goods, gas and utilities, and caregiving. The list points to the cost of daily life: rent, medical bills, food prices, energy bills and care for family members.

What happens next

On the Republican side, Speaker Mike Johnson has said he will not serve as House minority leader next year, Reuters reported. The party that loses the majority will also need a new leader in the House.

The next date is Nov 18, when House Democrats hold their leadership elections. Jeffries needs a majority of his own party in that vote to move forward as its choice for Speaker.

The final test comes on Jan 3, 2027, when the new Congress convenes and the full House votes for Speaker. If Jeffries reaches 218 votes that day, he will take the gavel and make history as the first Black Speaker of the House.
