Lionel Messi set up the equaliser and then scored the winner in the 83rd minute as Inter Miami came from behind to beat the New England Revolution 2 to 1 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Sunday, November 1, 2026.

The first half finished scoreless. New England then took control early in the second half. Daniel Gazdag opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, finishing a move set up by Ilay Feingold and Peyton Miller, and the home side looked set to protect that lead in front of a crowd of 54,112.

The comeback

Miami levelled in the 69th minute. German Berterame scored his 10th goal of the regular season, with Lionel Messi credited with the assist and Telasco Segovia also credited on the play. The assist was Messi 16th of the league campaign.

Segovia then turned provider for the winner. In the 83rd minute Messi scored his league leading 26th goal of the season, assisted by Segovia, to complete the turnaround. Segovia assisted on both Miami goals and reached a career high 12 assists in his second full season.

What the result changes

The win moved Inter Miami, at 16 wins, 6 losses and 11 draws for 59 points, into second place in the Eastern Conference. Miami passed New England, at 18 wins, 11 losses and 4 draws for 58 points, by one point, with one regular season match remaining for each club.

It was also Miami 10th road win of the season, three more than any other team in Major League Soccer, a record that helps explain why the club could recover on the road after falling behind.

A record crowd and a late call

Attendance was 54,112, a season high for New England and the second largest home crowd in the club regular season history.

New England four match winning streak ended with the loss. The club also lost for the first time this season after being ahead or tied in the 75th minute. A late apparent New England equaliser was overturned after video review, with referee Sergii Boiko ruling Luca Langoni offside on the play.

The result was final at the close of play on Sunday. It gave Miami a one point edge in the standings on the same night New England lost a lead late, after holding that lead into the final fifteen minutes of the match.

What comes next

Inter Miami hosts Charlotte FC on Saturday to close the regular season. New England plays at Orlando City on Saturday.
