Giants Lose Tremaine Edmunds for the Season With a Torn Chest Muscle
Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, who played every defensive snap in the first six games and led the New York Giants with 50 tackles, will miss the rest of the season, according to reports on Friday.
Key points
- New York Giants linebacker Tremaine Edmunds will miss the rest of the 2026 season with a torn muscle in his chest, a source told ESPN reporter Jordan Raanan.
- Dan Duggan of The Athletic first reported that the injury is season ending.
- The loss is large because of the role Edmunds played.
New York Giants linebacker Tremaine Edmunds will miss the rest of the 2026 season with a torn muscle in his chest, a source told ESPN reporter Jordan Raanan. The Giants had listed the problem as a shoulder injury and had already ruled Edmunds out of Sunday's game at the Houston Texans.
Dan Duggan of The Athletic first reported that the injury is season ending. The later ESPN report gave the specific diagnosis, a torn chest muscle, which explains why a player first listed with a shoulder injury will not return this year. Edmunds joins quarterback Jaxson Dart and pass rusher Brian Burns as key Giants players who will not return from injuries this season, according to the reports.
A defense loses its signal caller
The loss is large because of the role Edmunds played. He played all 380 of the Giants defensive snaps across their first six games. He led the team with 50 tackles and shared the team lead with two sacks. He also wore the green dot as the defensive signal caller, the player who receives the calls and sets the defense on the field.
Edmunds was hurt in the Giants loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. He did not practice during the week. On Friday the team determined that playing through the injury was not possible, Athlon Sports reported, citing the ESPN report. The Associated Press reported the same Friday ruling in team terms: Edmunds was ruled out for Sunday at Houston after missing practice all week.
McFadden steps in next to Reese
Micah McFadden is expected to take over Edmunds role in the starting lineup next to rookie Arvell Reese, who was drafted fifth overall, NBC Sports reported. Giants head coach John Harbaugh spoke about McFadden earlier and backed him for the job.
"I think I said early on we have three starters. So, when and if that happens, Micah is ready. He's a starter, and he'll play really well. He'll be excited for his opportunity," Harbaugh said, in comments reported by Sports Illustrated.
Edmunds signed a three year, 36 million dollar contract with the Giants in free agency this offseason, after earlier stops in Buffalo and Chicago. He is a two time Pro Bowler in his ninth season. He had never finished a season with fewer than 100 tackles, a record that shows the level of production the Giants now have to replace for the rest of the year.
The Giants have other injury problems for Sunday as well. Cornerback Greg Newsome was also ruled out for the Texans game with a concussion. Tight end Theo Johnson is doubtful with a neck injury, the Associated Press reported. The Giants travel to Houston without their defensive signal caller, a starting cornerback, and possibly their tight end, and they know Edmunds will not be back to help them later in the season.
