Further Ado ended his racing career the way he spent it at Keeneland: in front, by almost nothing this time. The three-year-old colt won the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland in Lexington on Saturday by a nose over Owen Almighty, in a photo finish that took time to separate. He covered the mile in 1:34.50 as the even-money favorite.

On the same Championship Saturday card, Bacio won the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint by two lengths, and the $7 million Breeders' Cup Classic was still to come later in the day, closing the nine-race Grade 1 programme.

A head bob at the wire

Full Serrano set the pace in the Dirt Mile through fractions of 22.67 seconds for the quarter and 46.14 for the half. Owen Almighty pressed him and took charge entering the stretch. Further Ado, racing fourth early under Flavien Prat, came out to challenge. The two horses ran together from the eighth pole to the wire, with Owen Almighty drifting out and Further Ado holding his ground. The photo gave it to Further Ado by the narrowest margin the sport has. He paid $4.02 to win. Full Serrano held third, two lengths back.

The closeness was new. Further Ado broke his maiden at Keeneland by 20 lengths last year and won the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes there in April by 11 lengths. This was his third win in three starts at the track, and it was nothing like the other two. His lifetime record stands at five wins from eleven starts. He finished 11th in the Kentucky Derby in May.

The Dirt Mile was his final race. Further Ado now retires to stud at Spendthrift Farm, which owns him. Trainer Brad Cox saddled him for the win.

Bacio runs off in the Turf Sprint

Earlier on the card, Bacio put on the day's clearest display of speed. The three-year-old, trained by Wesley Ward and ridden by Juan Hernandez, made the lead in the Grade 1 Turf Sprint over five and a half furlongs and drew away entering the stretch. He won by two lengths in 1:02.11. Cy Fair finished second and Starlust third.

Bacio came to Keeneland with a European win behind him. He won the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York in August. Sporting Life's trackside team called him the fastest horse in the world after Saturday's run. That is a claim sprinters invite every autumn, and Bacio's two-length win over a full field is the evidence his camp will point to.

Why it matters

Championship Saturday is the second and final day of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, in its 43rd edition this year at Keeneland. Saturday's card holds nine Grade 1 races, and the Dirt Mile and Turf Sprint results set the tone before the Classic, the race that decides the horse of the year argument most seasons.

For Further Ado, the nose win rewrites his record in one line. A colt who won his big Keeneland races by 20 lengths and 11 lengths now also owns a championship won by a nose, against the best milers in training. Breeders value that kind of finish, and Spendthrift will sell it when his first foals arrive.
