Key points

  • A minibus collided with a heavy truck on a highway west of Cairo on Saturday, killing 10 people and injuring 24 others, Egypt's health ministry said.
  • Ten of the injured are in critical condition.
  • Social Solidarity Minister Maya Morsi ordered urgent financial assistance for eligible victims and their families.

A minibus collided with a heavy truck on a highway west of Cairo on Saturday, killing 10 people and injuring 24 others, Egypt's health ministry said. The crash happened near 6th of October City, a large satellite city in Giza province on the western outskirts of the capital, at the intersection of the Middle Ring Road and the Al-Dabaa Highway.

Ten of the injured are in critical condition. Health ministry spokesman Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said the figures were preliminary and officials were still assessing the situation. Twenty ambulances were sent to the scene and the injured were taken to nearby hospitals, the ministry said. Hospitals in the area were told to raise their level of readiness to receive the wounded.

Social Solidarity Minister Maya Morsi ordered urgent financial assistance for eligible victims and their families.

The junction named by the ministry is one of the new ring routes built to carry traffic around the capital's western growth. The Middle Ring Road links the satellite cities of Giza with the desert highways running west and south, and the Al-Dabaa road carries traffic toward the Mediterranean coast. Both roads move a heavy mix of trucks, private cars and the minibuses that serve the new cities, at highway speed, day and night.

That mix is why a single collision on these roads so often produces a double digit death toll. A minibus carries a full load of passengers in a light vehicle. A heavy truck carries the mass. When the two meet at speed, the ministry's first count is rarely the last word, which is why officials stressed that Saturday's figures were preliminary while hospitals were still reporting.

A road toll that keeps repeating

Road accidents injure more than 75,000 people a year in Egypt and kill more than 5,000, according to the state statistics agency. Long desert highways, heavy truck traffic and minibuses carrying workers between satellite cities and farms are a recurring mix in the worst crashes.

Saturday's crash was the second deadly collision on the roads west of Cairo in less than two weeks. Earlier in October, a truck hit a tour bus on a desert highway south of the capital, killing at least 13 people. The two crashes involved different vehicles, different roads and different passengers. They share the same pattern: a heavy truck, a bus full of people, and a high speed road on the edge of the city.

What happens next

No cause for Saturday's crash has been announced. Egyptian prosecutors routinely open an investigation after a fatal road crash, and the health ministry said its count could change as hospitals report. The names of the dead have not been released.

For the families, the next news will come from hospitals in Giza, where ten people were still in critical condition on Saturday night.
