Felix Nmecha scored twice in the second half as Borussia Dortmund beat promoted Elversberg 2-1 at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday, a result that extended Dortmund's unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season to nine games and kept them level on points with leaders Bayern Munich.

The first half gave no hint of the finish. Elversberg, playing bold and organised football, matched Dortmund for long spells and the teams went in at 0-0. Dortmund lost Carney Chukwuemeka to injury after 34 minutes, and they were already without striker Serhou Guirassy. For 45 minutes the home crowd had little to cheer.

Nmecha breaks the game open

The breakthrough came ten minutes after the restart. Fabio Silva laid the ball off and Nmecha drove a low shot in from the edge of the box in the 55th minute for 1-0.

His second, in the 71st minute, was the goal of the game. Nmecha struck from about 25 yards and the ball flew into the bottom corner. Two long-range finishes from a central midfielder had turned a flat afternoon into a comfortable lead, and Nmecha left the field as the clear man of the match.

Futkeu makes Dortmund sweat

Elversberg refused to fold. Substitute Noel Futkeu met Florian Le Joncour's delivery with a scissor kick in the 81st minute to make it 2-1, and the last ten minutes were nervous ones for the home side. Elversberg pushed players forward and won a run of set pieces in stoppage time, but Gregor Kobel and his defence held firm and Dortmund took the points.

Level with Bayern going into the break

The win lifts Dortmund to 21 points from nine games, second in the table and level on points with Bayern Munich, who beat Mainz 2-1 earlier on Saturday. Elversberg stay on 13 points, a strong return for a promoted side, and their performance in Dortmund showed why: organised, brave on the ball, and dangerous until the final whistle.

Both clubs now pause for the international break. Dortmund return on Saturday, November 21, away to Borussia Monchengladbach, while Elversberg host SC Freiburg the same day. Dortmund head into that break unbeaten, and with a midfielder in Nmecha who decided a tight game almost on his own.

There is a wider point for Dortmund in this result. They won a game in which their first-choice striker was missing, a midfielder went off injured in the first half, and the visitors played well enough to lead on another day. Title challenges are built on afternoons like this one, where the points come from a single player stepping forward when the team game is not flowing. On Saturday, that player was Nmecha.
