A woman from Roseville was killed early on Sunday when a Chevrolet Tahoe rolled several times on southbound Interstate 75 near Schaefer Road in Detroit, Michigan State Police said.
Troopers responded to the rollover about an hour after the fatal Davison Freeway crash late on Saturday, at the start of a Halloween night that ended with five people dead in three separate crashes on metro Detroit freeways.
What troopers say happened
State police said, preliminarily, that the white Tahoe was traveling southbound at a high speed when the driver lost control. The SUV struck a concrete barrier and then rolled several times, the Detroit Free Press reported.
The driver and one passenger were ejected during the crash. A third woman was trapped inside the SUV and had to be extricated, police said.
One of the passengers, a woman from Roseville, died. State police did not release her name, and this report does not name her. The first reports did not give the conditions of the driver or the other woman.
Speed and reckless driving suspected
As of midmorning on Sunday, the crash was still under investigation, and state police said speed and reckless driving were suspected factors.
WXYZ Channel 7 in Detroit reported the same night that a child was killed and several other people were hurt in three separate crashes on metro Detroit freeways overnight, the set of crashes state police later laid out in detail.
Speaking on Monday, November 2, Michigan State Police Lt. Ty Howard, the public information officer for the region, said the three crashes are believed to have involved alcohol, speeding and reckless driving. "We can't enforce our way out of bad decision-making," Howard told the Free Press. He said the department has run repeated targeted enforcement efforts, and that poor choices behind the wheel reach a whole community, not only the driver.
The same night, two other freeway crashes
Before the Tahoe rollover, a child died late on Saturday in a three vehicle crash on the Davison Freeway near I-75, where the driver of a Chevrolet Impala was arrested on a charge of operating while intoxicated causing a death. After the rollover, three women from Detroit died at about 2 a.m. on Sunday when their car went airborne on the Lodge Freeway near Wyoming Avenue.
Police have not said how fast the Tahoe was traveling, whether the women inside were wearing seat belts, or which hospital treated the survivors.
