What troopers say happened
State police said, preliminarily, that the driver failed to negotiate a curve and the car went off the freeway. It sped up an embankment, passed through shrubbery and went into the air, FOX 2 Detroit reported.
The car came down on the entrance ramp to the southbound Lodge from Wyoming Avenue and collided with a concrete barrier, according to the state police account carried by the Detroit Free Press and FOX 2.
The driver and both passengers died from their injuries. All three were women from Detroit. State police would not release their names, and this report does not name them.
Alcohol and speed suspected
Investigators said alcohol and speed are suspected to have contributed to the crash. The Detroit Free Press reported that alcohol and speed were listed as suspected factors in a state police social media post at midday on Sunday, and FOX 2 reported that investigators attributed the crash to high speed and alcohol.
The crash remains under investigation. Police have not said what kind of car it was, how fast it was traveling, or whether the women were wearing seat belts.
One of three fatal Halloween night crashes
The Lodge crash was the last of three fatal crashes on metro Detroit freeways across Halloween night, state police said. A child died in a three vehicle crash on the Davison Freeway late on Saturday, and a woman from Roseville died in a rollover crash on Interstate 75 early on Sunday.
Speaking on Monday, November 2, Michigan State Police Lt. Ty Howard, the public information officer for the region, said the three crashes are believed to have involved alcohol, speeding and reckless driving. "We can't enforce our way out of bad decision-making," Howard told the Free Press. He said poor choices behind the wheel affect a whole community, not only the driver who makes them. Howard said his department has conducted numerous targeted enforcement efforts to stem such issues. In the Davison Freeway crash earlier that night, the five other people in the Impala were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to critical, and Howard declined to release the child's age.
