UConn announced on Friday, October 30, that men's basketball coach Dan Hurley has signed a two-year contract extension that keeps him under contract through the 2031-32 season. The school said the deal maintains his annual salary of roughly $8 million. The news was first reported by Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, and UConn confirmed it on Friday afternoon.

"Dan has proven to be the very best coach in men's college basketball, and we're thrilled to keep him home at UConn for the next six years," athletic director David Benedict said in the university's statement.

Hurley had four years remaining on the six-year contract he signed in 2024. The new agreement runs six years through 2032 under the existing terms, the university said, which means the extension pushes the end of his deal out by two seasons rather than rewriting it.

The money keeps Hurley near the very top of the sport. His 2024 contract, worth $50 million over six years, made him the second-highest paid coach in college basketball behind Bill Self of Kansas in the USA Today database of public schools. According to CT Insider, he is set to earn $7.65 million in the 2030-31 season and $7.85 million in 2031-32, with a $1 million retention bonus on top of those figures.

Hurley took over a program at a low point in 2018 and rebuilt it into a champion. UConn won the national championship in 2023 and again in 2024, making him one of only three coaches to win consecutive titles since the John Wooden era. His record at UConn is 199 wins against 75 losses.

The 2024 deal came after Hurley turned down an offer to become head coach of the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers, a pursuit that played out in public days after his second title. Friday's extension closes the same question before it can open again. Stability at the top is a recruiting asset in itself: players who sign with UConn this fall now know the coach who recruited them is under contract for their full college careers and beyond. Hurley turns 54 in January, and with his contract running through 2032, he has no obvious reason to listen the next time an NBA team calls.

The extension finalizes salary terms that had already been negotiated as part of his 2024 deal, UConn said. CT Insider reported a revised buyout that starts at $6 million after this season and steps down year by year, reaching $1 million in the final 2030-31 season, a schedule that makes a move away from Storrs expensive now and cheaper only near the end of the contract.
