What officers found on Yorkland Road
At around 5:10 a.m. on Friday, November 6, Columbus police responded to the 1300 block of Yorkland Road on a report of a deceased male lying on a lawn, The Columbus Dispatch reported from the police account. Officers who arrived found De'Montrez Jackson, 17, suffering from at least one gunshot wound, according to police.
Columbus Division of Fire medics pronounced Jackson dead at the scene at 5:20 a.m., police said. WCMH, the NBC affiliate in Columbus, reported that officers arrived at an apartment unit in the Sussex Square Apartment complex on Yorkland, in the Livingston-McNaughten area on the city's far East Side, and that the victim was pronounced dead at the scene early Friday.
Police released Jackson's name and age on Friday. No photo of him has been released by police in the reports published so far, and none is used here.
The investigation
Columbus police homicide detectives are working to determine the circumstances of the shooting, police said. A suspect has not been publicly identified, and the reports published Friday did not announce any arrest.
Police have not said what led to the gunfire, where the shots were fired, or whether Jackson knew the person who shot him. The first police account describes a report of a man lying on a lawn. It does not describe a chase, a vehicle, or a weapon recovered at the scene, and detectives have not given a time for the shooting itself, only for the response that found him.
What has not been released
Several basic facts remain unanswered a day later. Police have not said whether anyone heard the shots, whether a vehicle left the area, or whether the shooting happened on Yorkland Road or somewhere else before Jackson was found. They have not named a motive. The address in the police account is a block, the 1300 block of Yorkland Road, near the Sussex Square apartments and the Reynoldsburg line on the far East Side.
Until detectives report more, the confirmed record is short. A call brought officers to Yorkland Road at about 5:10 a.m. Friday. They found a 17 year old with at least one gunshot wound. Medics pronounced him dead at 5:20 a.m. Homicide detectives hold the case, and no suspect has been publicly identified.
