Two people died Friday afternoon after a police chase that crossed four counties in eastern Iowa ended in a head-on crash on U.S. Highway 30 on the west side of Cedar Rapids, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

How the chase began

A Marshall County sheriff's deputy tried to make a traffic stop along Highway 30 on Friday afternoon, Nov. 6, Iowa State Patrol spokesperson Sgt. Alex Dinkla said. The driver did not stop, and the pursuit that followed crossed several counties before it reached Linn County and the Cedar Rapids city limits.

The driver was behind the wheel of a 2004 Chevrolet Impala, according to an Iowa State Patrol crash report. Cedar Rapids police and fire crews joined the response as the chase entered the city, according to a Cedar Rapids police news release.

Shots fired during the pursuit

The State Patrol crash report said the driver fired on law enforcement during the chase and struck an occupied police cruiser. Officers tried several times to disable the fleeing car, the report said.

The chase ended at about 3 p.m. The fleeing car was traveling against traffic in the westbound lanes of Highway 30 when it collided head on with another 2004 Chevrolet Impala near Williams Boulevard, on the west side of Cedar Rapids. The crash and the response that followed caused heavy traffic delays on Highway 30, KCRG reported.

Both drivers died in the crash, according to the State Patrol report. The report did not identify either driver, and officials had released no names by Saturday.

What remains unknown

The State Patrol continues to investigate the crash. The reports released so far do not say why the deputy first tried to stop the car, and they do not describe the condition of the officer whose cruiser was struck. Officials have not said when the names of the two people who died will be released.

Highway 30 is the main east and west route across this part of Iowa, and the stretch near Williams Boulevard carries drivers between Cedar Rapids and the smaller towns to the west. A wrong way car in the westbound lanes left oncoming drivers almost no room to react, and investigators are now working through how the pursuit unfolded across four counties before it ended on that stretch of highway.
