A registered nurse was shot dead inside her Bronx apartment on Tuesday night while she was on the phone with her father, and the man police say shot her was found dead beside her, the New York Police Department said.

Andrea Cantarini, 37, was shot in the head inside her apartment on Blackstone Avenue in Riverdale at about 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4, the NYPD said in a press release. Juan Cornelio Diaz, 38, was found dead alongside her with a gunshot wound to the head. Both of them lived in the building, the department said.

A father's call to 911

Cantarini was talking to her father when the shooting started, according to police and law enforcement sources cited by the New York Post. Sources familiar with the investigation told amNewYork that her father heard his daughter screaming and what sounded like three gunshots during the call, and that the boyfriend was heard telling him, "It's over for her." The NYPD did not confirm that account when PEOPLE asked the department about it.

Her father called 911, and officers who went to the apartment found Cantarini and Diaz dead. The Post reported that officers believe the violence erupted during a domestic dispute. PEOPLE reported that police have not released information about a motive. The investigation is ongoing.

Diaz was a United States Customs and Border Protection officer stationed at John F. Kennedy International Airport, the Post reported.

A nurse who earned her diploma in 2025

Cantarini earned her nursing diploma in 2025 at the City University of New York, completing the degree while raising her daughter, who was four years old at the time, according to an interview she gave the university. She had worked part time as a mental health worker at a psychiatric hospital. At the time of her death she was a registered nurse at the St. Barnabas Health System, PEOPLE reported.

Police have announced no other suspects, and no further details about the investigation were released on Wednesday.
