Bodum USA is recalling about 5.9 million French press coffee makers in the United States after reports that the glass carafe can break during use and burn the person holding it. The recall covers presses sold from 1974 through October 2026, one of the longest sales runs in a consumer recall this year.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission notice says Bodum has identified 70 reports of glass carafes breaking during use, including 48 reports of burns to consumers. The hazard starts with an ordinary kitchen habit. Stirring coffee with a metal spoon or another metal utensil can damage the glass, and a damaged carafe can then break unexpectedly while the press is in use, spilling hot coffee and posing a risk of serious burn injury.

Which presses are included

The recall involves 8 cup and 12 cup French press coffee makers with replaceable glass carafes from eight Bodum lines: Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya. The presses were sold at Target, Walmart and coffee and home goods stores nationwide, and online through Amazon, the Bodum website and other online retailers, for about 15 to 65 dollars. They were manufactured in Portugal and Thailand and imported by Bodum USA, which is based in New York.

Because the presses were sold for more than five decades, many of the recalled units are likely to be sitting in kitchen cabinets, offices and vacation homes rather than in the hands of the people who first bought them. The model names and the replaceable glass carafe are the identifiers given in the recall notice for checking a press already in the home.

What owners should do

Consumers are urged to stop using metal spoons or utensils to stir coffee inside the carafe, and to contact Bodum to receive a plastic stirring spoon and a warning label reminding them not to use damaged carafes. The remedy focuses on how the press is used and on spotting damage before the glass fails, rather than on returning the coffee maker.

Bodum said that "while the rate of reported incidents involving carafe breakage during use is extremely low, especially considering that Bodum has sold millions of these products in the U.S. for decades, this recall will further encourage the safe use of our French Press Coffee Makers."

Anyone who owns one of the named models can check the carafe for chips or cracks, set metal utensils aside when stirring, and contact Bodum for the free spoon and warning label described in the recall notice.
