Atlanta police are asking residents for help identifying a second shooter after a shootout outside a southwest Atlanta apartment complex sent bullets through the walls of two homes and wounded two women who were inside.
Police released surveillance video showing the suspect they are still looking for, a person wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans. Investigators said that person opened fire during the shootout outside the Castleton Apartments on Bent Creek Way, off Campbellton Road. Police have not identified the second suspect beyond the clothing visible in the footage, and they have not said what started the dispute.
Bullets through two apartment walls
The gunfire broke out at about 4:20 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5. Atlanta News First, citing an Atlanta Police Department spokesperson, put the call at about 4:23 p.m. at 1994 Bent Creek Way SW, the address for The Park at Castleton Apartments. Officers who arrived found a 19 year old woman and a 21 year old woman with gunshot wounds.
Police said several people exchanged fire outside the complex before fleeing. Bullets penetrated two separate apartment units and struck each woman inside her own home. Paramedics took both women to a hospital. Officers said both were awake and breathing when they were taken. Police have not released the names of the two women and have not given an updated condition on their recovery.
Surveillance footage captured suspects firing weapons outside the residential buildings before running from the complex, police said.
A 15 year old already charged
Officers detained a 15 year old boy at the scene shortly after the shots were fired. On Friday, police confirmed the teen had been arrested and charged in the case. His charges are aggravated assault, first degree criminal damage to property, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a handgun by a person under 18.
Police did not release the teenager's name because he is a juvenile. He was taken to the Metro Regional Youth Detention Center.
Investigators have not identified the other people who took part in the gunfire, beyond the second suspect shown in the released video, and have not stated what triggered the initial dispute.
A $5,000 reward for a name
Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest and indictment in the case. Anyone with details can call the tip line at 404-577-8477, submit a tip online at stopcrimeatl.org, or use the P3 Tips mobile app. Tipsters can remain anonymous and do not have to give a name to receive the reward, police said.
For families inside the Castleton Apartments, the case is not abstract. Two women were shot inside their own homes by gunfire that started outside, and at least one person who fired that day is still unidentified. Police are asking anyone who recognizes the person in the black hoodie and blue jeans in the released footage to call, even anonymously.
