Atlanta, Georgia: Two DeKalb County Officers Shot on Bouldercrest Road, Suspect in Custody

Two DeKalb County police officers were shot on Sunday evening, November 1, while answering a domestic call at an apartment complex on Bouldercrest Road in southeast Atlanta. Both officers were taken to a hospital and listed in stable condition. The man police say shot them is in custody.

What police say happened

Officers went to the 2000 block of Bouldercrest Road SE at about 6:30 p.m. local time, DeKalb County Police Chief Greg Padrick said in an update Sunday night. At the door, the officers met a 26-year-old man. Padrick said the man opened fire on the officers, and one officer returned fire. Two officers were struck by gunfire.

The shooting drew a large police response to the block on Sunday night. WSB-TV reported an active and evolving scene at 2000 Bouldercrest Road at 8:25 p.m., and Atlanta News First and FOX 5 Atlanta reported through the evening that two officers had been shot on duty.

The search in the woods

After the shooting, the man ran into a wooded area near the complex, Padrick said. Officers used the surveillance camera system at the apartment complex to get a clear look at him and broadcast a lookout to other units searching the area.

The man was later taken into custody and transported to a hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition. Local stations reported that the suspect had also been shot before his arrest. Police have not said in their public updates how he was hurt.

Investigation

Padrick asked the community to keep the injured officers in their thoughts and prayers as they recover. WSB-TV reported that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting of the two officers on duty.

Police have not released the names of the two officers or of the man in custody, and no charges had been announced in the reports published by Monday morning. The department has not said what brought officers to the home on the domestic call, and Padrick said the circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation.

For southeast Atlanta, the case now turns on the state investigation and on the first court filings against the man in custody. The two officers, both stable, remain the center of the story on Bouldercrest Road.
