The 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia has been postponed. The Asian Football Confederation announced the decision on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, moving its flagship national team tournament out of its planned January slot by almost a full year.
The tournament was originally scheduled for January 7 to February 5, 2027 in Saudi Arabia. The new dates are December 23, 2027 to January 21, 2028. The AFC said the new dates will be submitted to FIFA for final approval.
Why the dates moved
The AFC organising committee said the reschedule was approved "in light of the current exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region, including substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions."
In a fuller statement reported by USA Today, the committee said: "Exceptional circumstances have been created for the organisation and delivery of the competition as originally scheduled, making the postponement necessary in the interest of all participating teams, officials, spectators and other stakeholders."
The decision followed consultations with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and the local organising committee, according to reporting of the AFC announcement.
The attack in the background
Reuters reported that a strike on Riyadh's international airport last month killed at least 12 people and wounded more than 300. Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement claimed responsibility for the strike. Reuters described it as the deadliest attack in Saudi Arabia in more than a decade.
Local organisers had insisted last month that the Asian Cup was on schedule despite security fears. That position held until Tuesday's announcement reversed it.
Saudi Arabia stays as host
The postponement changes the calendar, not the host. Saudi Arabia remains the host of the 24 team tournament, with Jeddah, Riyadh and Al Khobar set to stage matches.
For the 24 qualified teams, the move rewrites a full year of preparation. A tournament planned for January 2027 now sits at the end of that year, running across the new year into January 2028. Teams, fans and broadcasters who had planned around the original dates now wait on the final step in the process, FIFA approval of the December 2027 to January 2028 window.
The AFC announcement gave no new date beyond the proposed window. The tournament stays in Saudi Arabia, in the same three host cities, with the same 24 team field. Only the timing has changed, and it has changed because the confederation judged that the original timing could no longer be delivered as planned.
