A 21-year-old Bethel College student died on Thursday evening after his motorcycle collided with an SUV at the intersection of Kansas Highway 96 and Greenwich Road in northeast Wichita. Wichita police identified the rider on Friday as Bader Nassar. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sedgwick County dispatch sent first responders to the intersection just before 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, following a call about a collision between a vehicle and a motorcycle, KWCH reported. Crews arrived to find the two vehicles in the intersection and one person dead. Officers remained at the scene into the evening, interviewing witnesses and working to piece together how the crash happened.
On Friday, police gave a fuller account of the collision. The GMC Acadia had come off westbound K-96 and was turning left onto Greenwich Road when it struck the motorcycle as the motorcycle traveled from Greenwich Court, according to the police account carried in local reporting on Friday. Investigators are looking at speed as a possible factor in the crash. Police have not announced any charges in the case. The reports released so far do not name the driver of the Acadia and do not announce any other injuries.
Nassar attended Bethel College in North Newton, north of Wichita. Bethel, founded in 1887, is the oldest Mennonite college in North America, and its campus sits in North Newton, a small city on the corridor between Wichita and Newton. The crash happened at a busy interchange on Wichita's east side, where the K-96 highway meets Greenwich Road.
The Friday identification ended a night in which the rider was known publicly only as the person killed at the intersection. KWCH, citing Sedgwick County dispatch, reported the death on Thursday evening while officers were still interviewing witnesses at the scene. The police account released on Friday added the make of the SUV, the direction each vehicle was traveling, and the first indication that speed may have played a part.
Detectives are asking anyone who saw the crash, or who has information about how it happened, to call Wichita police detectives at 316-350-3689. Anyone who was driving on K-96 or Greenwich Road around 7 p.m. on Thursday and saw the moments before the crash is among the witnesses detectives want to hear from. Tips can also go to Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111. The investigation is continuing, and police have not said when further findings will be released.
