Valparaiso beat No. 24 Purdue 83-80 in double overtime on Friday night at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Indiana, on a 3-pointer by Justus McNair as time expired. McNair released the shot a split second before the buzzer, and a replay review confirmed the ball was out of his hands in time. USA Today called it the first ranked upset of the season in men's college basketball.

Chaney carried the Beacons to the finish

Rakim Chaney scored a career-best 35 points on 14-of-22 shooting for Valparaiso (2-0), with eight rebounds and a team-high six assists. He fouled out early in the second overtime, but by then he had already saved the game once. Late in the first overtime, Purdue fouled Chaney with four seconds left before he could attempt a tying 3-pointer. He missed his first free throw, chased down his own rebound, and rattled in a contested 3-pointer to tie the game 70-70 and force a second overtime.

McNair finished with 17 points. JT Pettigrew added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Beacons, including a 3-pointer with 24.7 seconds left in the second overtime that put Valparaiso ahead 80-78. Daniel Jacobsen tied the game at 80-80 on a jumper with 4.4 seconds left, and McNair answered with the winner on the final possession.

Purdue led early, then lost its grip

Valparaiso trailed 19-4 early and went into halftime down 32-20. Jacobsen scored 11 first-half points for Purdue, while Chaney had 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting for the Beacons. Valparaiso outscored Purdue 38-26 in the second half. A 10-2 run tied the game 48-48 with 5:46 left in regulation, and McNair tied it again at 58-58 on a jumper with 1:03 to play.

In the first overtime, Purdue led 68-62 with 1:13 remaining. Hudson Scroggins made two free throws and Bruno Alocen hit a 3-pointer while being fouled to cut the margin to 68-67 with 40.2 seconds left. Alocen missed the free throw that would have tied the game. Antione West Jr. made two free throws with 6.8 seconds left to give Purdue a three-point lead, which set up Chaney's rebound and tying shot.

A bad night in the record book for Purdue

Jacobsen scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Purdue (0-2). C.J. Cox had 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Gicarri Harris added 11 points. As a team, Purdue shot 5-of-28 from 3-point range and committed 11 turnovers, according to USA Today.

The loss gave Purdue its first 0-2 start since the 1976-77 season. Purdue opened this season with a 78-72 loss to Gonzaga in Las Vegas. The Boilermakers had not lost at home to a Missouri Valley Conference team since Nov. 27, 1978, against Indiana State. Valparaiso ended a 19-game losing streak against Big Ten programs. Its most recent Big Ten win before Friday was against Penn State in 2004.

Purdue also paid for the game. The IndyStar reported that Purdue paid Valparaiso $90,000 to come to West Lafayette for the home opener. Purdue lost four starters from last season's Elite Eight team, and head coach Matt Painter now has a young lineup that has dropped its first two games at home and on a neutral court.
