US Central Command said its forces disabled a commercial vessel in the Gulf of Oman on Saturday, November 7, after the civilian crew ignored repeated warnings and attempted to violate the naval blockade against Iran multiple times. A US military aircraft fired precision munitions at the stern of the ship, the St. Kitts-flagged M/V Huda.
Before the strike, CENTCOM directed the crew to abandon the targeted spaces, in CENTCOM's own wording. The cargo vessel had visited an Iranian port and then tried to depart regional waters. CENTCOM's report, carried by Maritime Executive, describes a crew that was warned repeatedly and kept going, and a strike aimed at the stern of the ship.
The ship
The Huda is a dry bulk carrier of 24,993 deadweight tons. It was built in 1999 and is 159 metres long, and it is under Turkish management. UK Maritime Trade Operations placed the vessel about 18 nautical miles east of Khor Fakkan, in the United Arab Emirates, in the Gulf of Oman.
CENTCOM gave no account of the people on board. It did not say whether anyone was hurt, it did not say how many crew were on the ship, and it did not say what the ship was carrying. Those details remain unreported in the statements carried so far.
The blockade record
This was the first vessel the United States reported disabling in about a month. The last one was on October 10, when US forces struck the bulker Ocean Molica in the Gulf of Oman. The figures in the reporting put the wider enforcement count since July at 147 vessels redirected and five vessels disabled, with the Huda now the latest ship stopped by force.
The pattern in both cases is the same. A commercial ship that had called at an Iranian port tried to leave regional waters, warnings were issued and not followed, and US forces then disabled the ship rather than letting it pass. What happens to the Huda and its crew next has not been stated by CENTCOM in the reporting so far.
This action is confirmed by CENTCOM itself, the command running the blockade. It is separate from claims made by Iranian forces about shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, which have not been confirmed in the same way.
