An Arizona state trooper who answered a stranded driver's call for help is now in jail himself. Investigators booked Aiden Rosebeck, 35, into the Cochise County Jail on suspicion of unlawful sexual conduct involving a police officer, a class 5 felony, according to statements from the Cochise County Sheriff's Office and the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

What the sheriff's office says happened

The encounter took place on Nov. 1 outside Benson, a town about 45 miles southeast of Tucson. The woman had been involved in a hit-and-run crash on a Cochise County roadway, and Rosebeck responded to her original call for help, the Sheriff's Office said. Deputies later learned of a welfare check on the woman, who was stranded in her vehicle beside the road and distraught. She told deputies she had experienced inappropriate sexual conduct involving the trooper, according to the Sheriff's Office. Neither agency has described the nature of the reported conduct, and the woman has not been identified.

Detectives contacted Rosebeck, and he acknowledged a "physical interaction" with the woman during the incident, the Sheriff's Office said. Investigators gathered evidence that supported his arrest, the agency said, and the investigation is still open.

Two agencies, two investigations

DPS was notified of the allegations early on Nov. 2 and is cooperating with sheriff's investigators, DPS spokesman Bart Graves told The Arizona Republic. The department placed Rosebeck on unpaid administrative leave and opened a separate internal affairs investigation. Rosebeck joined DPS in 2020. The department did not identify his assignment, and Graves declined to give information beyond the department statement. In that statement, DPS Director Col. Jeffrey Glover said: "The public places its trust in us, and we have an absolute obligation to uphold that trust."

Sheriff Mark Dannels put the point in plainer terms. "When someone is stranded on the side of a roadway, they should be able to trust that a law enforcement officer who stops to assist them is there to protect them, not take advantage of their circumstances," Dannels said. "There will be no double standard. There will be no special treatment. And there will be no looking the other way," he said.

What happens next

The Sheriff's Office stressed that the arrest came from evidence developed during the investigation and that more work remains. Rosebeck is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court. FOX 10 Phoenix said it asked DPS whether the trooper was wearing an activated body camera and had not heard back when it published. Anyone with information about the case or similar incidents can call the Cochise County Sheriff's Office at 520-432-9500, the agency said. These are allegations, and no court has ruled on them.
