President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he has ordered the Justice Department to look into Democrats, accusing them of threatening a lot of people with impeachment and other forms of punishment. In a post on Truth Social, Trump called the alleged threats a criminal act and said he was ordering the department to investigate immediately, Reuters reported. He provided no evidence of a crime.
"The Democrats are going around threatening a lot of people, including the Attorney General of the United States, and others, with Impeachment and many other forms of punishment, even though they admit they have no reason to do so," Trump wrote, in a quote carried by Democracy Docket. He called the conduct "extortion at the highest level," Newsmax reported.
One senator named
Trump alleged that Democratic leaders have sent threatening letters to many innocent people, but he did not say who sent the letters, who received them, or what they said, Newsmax reported. Attorney General Todd Blanche was the official he named most directly. Trump also accused Democrats of threatening Republican donors with imprisonment because of their political support.
The only Democrat Trump named was Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan. He claimed Slotkin is going to go after all young people who believe in Republican values. The claim pointed back to remarks Slotkin made on October 13 at the University of Chicago, where she talked about pursuing signature cases against people who enabled Trump and said the prospect could make graduates think twice about joining his administration. Slotkin told CNN her point was that people should avoid illegal activity and refuse unlawful orders. She answered Trump on X on Saturday, saying people who break the law or use taxpayer money to enrich themselves should be held accountable, CNBC reported.
A fight over the new Congress
The order came four days after the November 3 midterm elections, in which Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress. The new Congress is sworn in on January 3, and Democratic leaders have promised investigations into the Trump family business dealings, alleged corporate corruption, immigration enforcement, and the Justice Department handling of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Newsmax reported.
Representative Robert Garcia of California is expected to chair the House Oversight Committee, and Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland is in line to chair the House Judiciary Committee. White House spokesperson Lauren Bis said on Wednesday that if Democrats choose to pursue sham investigations and radical left policies, they are choosing to work against the American people, Newsmax reported.
Impeachment is a power the Constitution gives to the House of Representatives. As of Saturday afternoon, the Justice Department had not announced that it had opened any investigation in response to the president's post, and it did not immediately respond to a request for comment, Reuters and CNBC reported.
