A late night shooting in Tampa ended with a 29-year-old man dead, and deputies say the man who shot him was in custody before the next nightfall.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to reports of shots fired in the 12000 block of Taliaferro Avenue at 11:19 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27, according to Tampa Bay 28. Deputies found Ronnie Sheppard, 29, suffering from upper body trauma. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

In its first report, FOX 13 said detectives believed the shooting was an isolated incident, that the victim's name had not yet been released, and that no arrests had been announced while the investigation was active.

An arrest in Gibsonton, less than 12 hours later

Detectives learned that an argument between the two men escalated into the shooting, the sheriff's office said. They identified the shooter as Nathan Campbell, 26. On Wednesday, October 28, detectives located Campbell at a home in Gibsonton and took him into custody, Tampa Bay 28 reported. The sheriff's office also released body camera video of deputies arresting Campbell.

Campbell faces two charges: murder in the second degree with a firearm discharge, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Sheriff Chad Chronister credited the speed of the arrest. "In less than 12 hours, a homicide suspect is off our streets," Chronister said. "This violent 10-time convicted felon can no longer victimize our community."

The arrest took place in Gibsonton, the unincorporated community south of Tampa in Hillsborough County, a short drive from the Taliaferro Avenue block where the shots were fired. The sheriff's office posted body camera video of deputies taking Campbell into custody at the home, and WFLA also reported the sheriff's office account of the arrest on Wednesday.

What is still unknown

The sheriff's office has not described what the argument between Sheppard and Campbell was about, and the reports published so far do not say where the two men were when the shots were fired beyond the Taliaferro Avenue block. No court date or bond information for Campbell was included in the sheriff's office account carried by Tampa Bay 28.

Campbell is charged, not convicted, and the allegations will be tested in court. For the neighborhood around Taliaferro Avenue, the case now moves from a shooting scene that FOX 13 described on Tuesday night, with a victim not yet named and no suspect announced, to a named defendant in custody within a day.
