Update: Sensex closes up 2,008.61 points at 79,310.01
The BSE Sensex settled at 79,310.01 on Thursday, up 2,008.61 points or 2.60 percent from its previous close of 77,301.40. The NSE Nifty 50 settled at 24,536.60, up 576.00 points or 2.40 percent from 23,960.60. The Hindu BusinessLine, Moneycontrol and Upstox all reported the same closing levels.
The close was the biggest single day gain in seven months, a sixth straight gain and the longest winning run in a year. Benchmarks are up more than 8 percent in six sessions, as oil fell after Democrats swept the US midterms and a shift away from AI trades raised hopes of stronger foreign inflows.
All sectors except media and chemicals ended higher. Nifty Auto led, Nifty Financial Services rose more than 4 percent and Nifty Bank more than 3 percent. The market value of BSE listed companies crossed Rs 500 lakh crore, up about Rs 8 lakh crore in the session. The rupee settled flat at 94.46 against the US dollar.
India's BSE Sensex opened at 78,910.94 on Thursday, November 5, 2026, up 1,609.54 points or 2.08 percent from its previous close of 77,301.40. Outlook Money reported that the opening level was a 10 week high.
The NSE Nifty 50 opened at 24,378.05, up 417.45 points or 1.74 percent from its previous close of 23,960.60. The rally extended the winning streak of Indian benchmarks to six consecutive sessions.
In early trade the Sensex rose 2.09 percent to a high of 78,922.44, and the Nifty rose 1.8 percent to a high of 24,391.95, Upstox reported.
Crude leads the reasons given for the rally
Reports attributed the rally to the sharp fall in crude oil prices, the strong overnight rally on Wall Street after Democrats won control of both chambers of the United States Congress in the midterm elections, renewed foreign investor buying, and improving sentiment about the West Asia conflict.
Brent crude traded at 93.78 dollars a barrel and United States West Texas Intermediate traded at 86.92 dollars, after a fall of nearly 10 percent in oil prices. Upstox reported that Brent fell 11 percent to an intraday low of 93.50 dollars from a Wednesday high of 104.96 dollars.
"The sharp advance reflects improving global risk sentiment, supported by lower crude prices and renewed institutional buying," Ponmudi R, chief executive of Enrich Money, told ANI.
ANI reported the same opening surge, with the Sensex up 1,609.54 points and the Nifty up 417.45 points, and said Brent crude was trading below 100 dollars at about 94 dollars a barrel.
The opening put both Indian benchmarks at their strongest start in weeks. The Sensex opened 1,609.54 points above its previous close and then added a little more in early trade to reach 78,922.44. The Nifty opened 417.45 points higher and reached 24,391.95 in early trade, a gain of 1.8 percent from its previous close at the high.
Thursday was the sixth straight session of gains for the benchmarks, according to Outlook Money. The reports published at the open gave the same set of drivers in the same order: cheaper crude first, then the Wall Street rally that followed the midterm result, then foreign investor buying and better sentiment on West Asia.
