Two Texas Lutheran University football players were killed early Monday in a single vehicle crash on State Highway 46 in Seguin, police said.
Seguin police identified the two men as A'Jean Augustine, 20, of Houston and Deyreck Dean, 23, of Rockwall. The crash was reported at about 2:38 a.m. on Monday, November 2, on State Highway 46, where a southbound 2012 Kia Sorento struck a guardrail on the bridge over FM Road 78, Seguin Police Lt. Mike McCann said, according to the Seguin Gazette-Enterprise. McCann said the 20 year old driver and the 23 year old passenger were both killed in the collision, and that both were Texas Lutheran students who were not from Seguin.
Police said the Sorento was traveling south on Texas 46 at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control. The vehicle crossed into the northbound lanes and struck a guardrail, according to police accounts carried by KSAT and the San Antonio Express-News. Both lanes of State Highway 46 just north of Interstate 10 were later reopened after the crash, KSAT reported.
The university confirms the loss
Texas Lutheran confirmed the deaths in a statement released Monday. "Junior A'Jean (AJ) Augustine of Houston and senior Deyreck Dean of Rockwall, both student athletes, were beloved members of our community and we will long feel the impact of their loss," the university said in the statement.
Augustine was a junior from Lamar High School in Houston and was in his third year as a kicker on the Texas Lutheran football team. He was majoring in kinesiology, according to the school athletics department. Dean played linebacker for Texas Lutheran, and his major was listed as business management by the athletics department.
Texas Lutheran is a private university based in Seguin with about 1,500 students. Seguin sits about 35 miles east of San Antonio in Guadalupe County, and Highway 46 is one of the main roads into the city from Interstate 10.
What is known, and what is not
Police have given a short account of the crash: one vehicle, a high rate of speed, a lost control, a crossing into the opposite lanes and a guardrail strike on the FM 78 bridge. Officers have not released a fuller account of why the SUV left its lanes, and no other vehicle was reported involved.
The deaths land on a small campus where both men were known through the football program. Augustine kicked for the Bulldogs, and Dean played linebacker. The university statement did not announce any memorial plans in the accounts published Monday.
