The standoff is over. Salt Lake City police took the man into custody after officers entered the home at about 5:20 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, and the shelter in place order was canceled, Gephardt Daily reported. Glen Mills, the department's chief of staff and communications director, told Gephardt Daily: "The situation has come to an end. Suspect is in custody and facing several charges." Mills also confirmed that officers had entered the residence to resolve the standoff. During the standoff, Mills said officers were trying to negotiate and that it appeared the man was experiencing a mental health crisis. Police have still not released the man's name in the reports published after the arrest, and the reports do not list the specific charges.
Salt Lake City police ordered residents to shelter in place on Friday evening after a man barricaded himself inside a home near 900 South and 1900 East and shots were fired from inside the house, the department said.
The order covers homes within a half mile of the intersection, on the east side of Salt Lake City. Police closed roads in the area and told residents inside the zone to stay in place while officers worked to end the standoff.
How the call started
"It all started with calls of a man making threats," the Salt Lake City Police Department said in a statement issued at 6:06 p.m. on Friday. "A man has barricaded himself inside a home. When officers arrived, shots were fired from inside the home."
Police did not say in that statement who the threats were aimed at, and they did not report any injuries. Dozens of police cars were reported at the scene as the response grew through the early evening.
KJZZ reported the same basic account on Friday night. Police had received calls about a man making threats, officers responded to the home near 900 South and 1900 East, and shots were fired from inside after officers arrived, according to the station.
Still barricaded at the last update
Police issued an update at 7:52 p.m. and said the standoff was still going. "The man is still barricaded inside the home. We are continuing efforts to negotiate a peaceful surrender," the department said.
The shelter in place order remained in force at that point for homes within a half mile radius, and the road closures in the area also remained in place, police said. That update was the last one in the reports published on Friday night, and it gave no time for when officers expected the man to come out.
What police have not said
Police have not released the man's name. The statements published on Friday did not say whether anyone else was inside the home, did not describe the threats that brought officers to the house, and did not report that anyone had been shot or hurt.
Police also did not say what time the first calls came in. The first statement the department issued on the incident was timed at 6:06 p.m., and the only later update in the Friday reports came at 7:52 p.m.
For residents inside the half mile zone, the practical effect on Friday night was simple. Roads near 900 South and 1900 East were closed, a large police presence was in the streets, and the order to shelter in place stayed in effect until police lifted it. Anyone driving toward the area on Friday night faced the closures around the intersection.
This article will be updated in place if police announce a surrender, an arrest, any injury, or the end of the shelter in place order.
