Phoenix, Arizona: Weekend Freeway Closures Hit SR 51, Loop 202, Loop 101, Loop 303 and SR 347 From Friday Night

Phoenix drivers get a full weekend of detours starting Friday night, October 23. The Arizona Department of Transportation closes four freeway stretches across the Valley until Monday morning, October 26, for paving, widening and bridge work, and narrows State Route 347 to one lane on two straight nights south of the city.

ADOT announced the list in its Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for October 23 to 26, and The Arizona Republic published the full schedule on Friday morning. ADOT warned that restriction schedules can change because of weather or other factors, as severe storms move out of the Phoenix area. North and east side closures

Northbound State Route 51 closes between Glendale Avenue and Shea Boulevard from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for a pavement improvement project. The northbound on ramps from Indian School Road to Northern Avenue close as well. ADOT's detour runs west on Glendale Avenue to northbound Seventh Street, then northbound Cave Creek Road to eastbound Cactus Road, back to SR 51 north of the closure.

Eastbound Loop 202, the Santan Freeway, closes between Gilbert and Williams Field roads from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for a widening project. The eastbound on ramps from Arizona Avenue to Val Vista Drive close, and drivers can use eastbound Chandler Boulevard and Williams Field Road, or eastbound Germann Road to Higley Road, to get past the work. A westbound off ramp on the Santan also closes from 10 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, with the Dobson Road off ramp suggested instead. Separately, the westbound Loop 202 off ramp at Arizona Avenue closes for the full weekend window for bridge work, with the McQueen Road and Alma School Road off ramps as the alternatives.

West side closures

Eastbound Loop 101, the Agua Fria Freeway, closes between 75th and 51st avenues from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for a widening project. The eastbound on ramps at Bell Road and Union Hills Drive close. Drivers can use eastbound Union Hills Drive to reconnect with Loop 101 at 51st or 35th Avenue.

Eastbound Loop 303 closes between Interstate 17 and 43rd Avenue over the same window, from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, for bridge construction. The posted detour uses northbound 43rd Avenue to eastbound Dove Valley Road to reach I-17.

South of the city on SR 347

State Route 347, the main road between Phoenix and the city of Maricopa, narrows to one lane in both directions on separate nights for a paving project. Northbound SR 347 is narrowed between Maricopa and Casa Blanca Road from 6 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday. Southbound SR 347 is narrowed on the same stretch from 6 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday.

Before you drive

Allow extra time anywhere these routes are part of the trip, and check AZ511 before leaving, since ADOT can shift the schedule if weather or field conditions change. The four full closures all lift at 5 a.m. Monday, in time for the morning commute, if the work stays on schedule.
