An Oklahoma City police officer convicted on seven charges, including rape and assault, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. Court records show Shamar Kitchens received the sentence on Tuesday, October 27, in Canadian County, after a jury found him guilty on all seven charges in September following a three-day trial. The jury had recommended a combined 69 years in prison across the seven counts.
The seven convictions
Kitchens was convicted of first-degree rape by instrumentation, first-degree rape by force or fear, forcible sodomy, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony, pointing a firearm, and domestic abuse assault and battery. The sentence handed down on Tuesday is the final court outcome in a case that began with his arrest by his own department almost two years ago.
What investigators said happened
Oklahoma City police arrested Kitchens in December 2024. Investigators accused him of sexually assaulting a woman inside a car following a night out in Norman on November 30, 2024. According to an affidavit in the case, investigators said Kitchens punched the woman in the head and face six times and threatened her with a gun during the assault.
Court documents show Kitchens and the woman had been in an on-again, off-again relationship and shared a child. The woman is not named in the court reporting on the case, and she is not named here.
Arrest, leave and trial
Kitchens pleaded not guilty and testified in his own defense during the trial. He was hired as an Oklahoma City police officer in January 2023, according to department statements reported at the time of his arrest, and he was first placed on paid administrative leave after the allegations surfaced. He has been on unpaid administrative leave from the Oklahoma City Police Department since March 2025, while the case moved through the Canadian County courts.
At the time of the arrest, police said the woman contacted officers and had visible injuries. Investigators said Kitchens had dropped her off at a home in Yukon and told her not to say anything. He posted a $66,000 bond and was released from the Canadian County jail. A department spokesperson said at the time that the case would be investigated like any other. "Anytime an officer is involved in an incident we're going to investigate it thoroughly just like any other incident regardless of what their status is or who they are," Captain Gary Littlejohn said, in the remarks reported by News 9 at the arrest.
The jury returned its guilty verdicts in September after the three-day trial, and the case then waited for the formal sentencing hearing set for October 27. With the 25-year sentence now imposed, the criminal case that followed Kitchens from his December 2024 arrest to the Canadian County courtroom is closed at the trial court level.
