A 19-year-old man was found dead early on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, in a student residence at the University of Toronto Mississauga in Mississauga, Ontario, and Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances of his death. The man was found in the McLuhan Court residence area, near Dundas Street West and Mississauga Road. His name has not been released.
The police response on Monday night
The SIU said its preliminary information is that Peel Regional Police received a 911 call on Monday afternoon, November 2, about an alleged assault involving a woman in Brampton. Officers located the man at the residence at about 9 p.m. on Monday. "A gunshot was heard and the man was found inside with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The man was pronounced deceased early this morning," the SIU said. The SIU described the Brampton report as an alleged assault, and no other injuries were reported in the incident.
Peel police said officers entered the unit after multiple unsuccessful attempts to communicate with the man and found him dead. Police said the incident ended at about 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, and they scheduled a news conference for 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
Why the watchdog is investigating
"As Peel Regional Police officers were in and around the scene at the time of the man's death, the SIU was notified and invoked its mandate," the SIU said. The unit assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to the case. It said there is no threat to public safety, and anyone with information is asked to contact the SIU.
Classes cancelled at the Mississauga campus
The university issued a shelter in place order on Monday night for students near McLuhan Court, a residence complex that houses hundreds of first-year students. The order was lifted early on Tuesday. The campus stayed open on Tuesday, but classes were cancelled. The university said the cancellation was out of compassion for the more than 2,000 students who live in residence and for others affected by the incident, and it made support services available.
"Employees who were likewise required to shelter in place on campus last night will also take the time they need for their wellbeing," the university said in a notice. It added: "UTM recognizes that over the coming days there will be many questions from members of our community. Please know that we are here to support you and our community."
What happens next
The SIU investigation will look at what happened between the arrival of officers at the residence on Monday night and the man's death early on Tuesday. Peel police were due to give their account at the news conference scheduled for Tuesday morning. The man's name had still not been released, and the university has not announced any change to the campus schedule beyond Tuesday.
