Updated 02:33 UTC. This is a developing story.

A retired San Francisco police sergeant is suspected of killing his wife, a former deputy chief, and their adult daughter before killing himself in Marin County, the Marin County Sheriff's Office said on Monday, October 12.

Deputies found the three dead inside a home on Strawberry Circle in Strawberry, an unincorporated community near Mill Valley, after a 911 call reported shots fired at about 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 11. The caller had been inside the home and got out safely before deputies arrived. Deputies secured the area, entered the home, and found three bodies inside.

The sheriff's office identified the dead as Kevin Mannix, 68, Ann Elizabeth Corriea Mannix, 65, and Katherine Elizabeth Mannix, 24. Investigators said the early findings point to a double murder suicide, with Kevin Mannix as the suspected shooter. Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Two long police careers

Ann Mannix retired from the San Francisco Police Department in 2021. She was the first woman to join the department's SWAT team and later led it. She became deputy chief of field operations in 2018 and later oversaw the special operations bureau.

Kevin Mannix retired as a sergeant in 2018 after 27 years with the department.

San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew sent a message to department staff confirming the deaths within hours of the discovery on Sunday night. The San Francisco Police Officers Association said Ann Mannix was a trailblazer in the department. Its president, Louis Wong, said the deaths of Ann Mannix and her daughter left the department family reeling.

What is still unknown

The sheriff's office said the investigation is still in its early stages. Officials have not released a motive. They have not said what led up to the shooting inside the home. More detail is expected as investigators finish their work at the scene and the coroner's office completes its review.

For now, the confirmed facts are narrow. Three members of one family are dead. Both parents spent their careers in the same police department. Their daughter was 24.
